I just found a boxed copy of Sword of the Stars with two of its expansions for $10 at my local office supply store. Is it a good buy? I enjoyed Homeworld and I've dabbled a bit in Space Empires V and Civilization.

You should buy it first, then ask people if it sucks(if other peoples opinions determine for you if a game is good or not) because who knows how long it will be there... But you really never know if a game is good or not until you play it because a lot of people don't have good taste in games, and will say a game sucks even though it is a really good game. Or say a game is amazing even though it is one of the worst games ever made.

That was kinda my thinking, heh! All I had to read was IGN's review and I slit the top on the box. It looks delightful, can't wait to try it.
I wish I could find such games for $10 at my local stores. :(

I wish we had local game stores :-p. Then again I haven't bought physical retail game since Civ4: Colonization so I highly doubt I'd buy any even if there was one since prices would be too high, all of them would have DRM in them and I would only get DVD case with game DVD's and few page 'manual' most of the time. GOG and GamersGate are all I need nowadays.
Sword of the Stars is incredibly awesome, enough so that I registered with GG to get their DRM-free version of Argos Naval Yards!

Oh gosh this is a cool game. We definitely need to get some kind of GOG game going!
