That thing has only 14 people asking for its comeback. Have you never played it ? Have you all FORGOTTEN it ? Are you just EVIL and giggling in your skulls-decorated basements rubbing your hands at the thought of every other game being made available before that one ?

If anybody here ever saw a flaw in that game, I ask them to step forward and speak.

ummmm.... the AI was not that brilliant?
So...uh... what is Subwar 2050? Wikipedia says it is a sci-fi submarine simulator, but beyond that nothing.

I was wondering about stuff like the setting, story, characters, etc.

Kotaku actually did a little piece on it a month ago:

I'm one ot these 14 people who voted and remembers the game. There are other games that are great and lack peoples attention like i.e. The Chaos Engine (34 votes). :/ I don't know why people overlook them. :(

Hmmmm, looks interesting. Hopefully GOG will release it at some point so I can give it a try.
I have only barely played it back in the day (got sidetracked by other games), but it did feel very atmospheric.

But I'm unsure if it is better than Archimedean Dynasty though. Maybe it is a bit more sim-like.
I can only compare it with Aquanox 2, and Subwar 2050 was much much better. For many subtle reasons, Aquanox never made me feel underwater, it was just a knowledge about the setting. Subwar is much more immersive (if I may say), and its movements, its colours and lighting, its tone, its strategy, really made you feel the water pressure around you. I can't exactly pinpoint why I succeeded where Aquanox fails, but, damn, it did.

If Aquanox 2 had been half as good, I wouldn't feel as eager to see Subwar reappear. I'd have my fill of viscous underwater dogfight. Actually, what I wish for is not even necessarily Subwar 2050, but at least a modern functionning game that would feature the same kind of setting and technologies, and put as much care into the "maritime feel" of it.
Ooo, I'll go click on that...

I do indeed remember it, and still have my original disks for it. I think I found it rather difficult at the time though, and ran out of steam / talent fairly early on in the campaigns. I seem to remember having to hit each enemy sub with about a dozen rockets before it'd die, and only being able to carry about 30 rockets...

Telika:
I agree with you that it had some very original ideas and had a good dose of realism about it, also the graphics were very nice for its time (still are imo).
But the flaw is that your weapons aren't effective at all, you need all your torpedos just to kill a single sub, like they forgot to put in explosives in the @#$% things, while the enemies torpedos seem to work just fine. For this reason I was dissappointed of it when I finally got to play it.
Another reason why I didn't vote for it is because I have still got a perfectly good working copy of it, . ;o)

I play it regularly, with it's expansion, on my DosBox terabyte HD.
