If the universal 'new boyfriend smell' was High Karate, ciggerettes, desperate perspiration and kebab meat, my adolescence could have been so much different.

Well i would have lost my virginity a lot sooner i'm sure.
Hey at least you don't have my problem.

The genres I like the most are usually the ones I suck at! XD

I can't even beat easy adventure games like Telltale Sam and Max without using a walkthrough.

Platformers I never 100 percent due to sucking

I never normally complete an RPG, (the last two were Devil Survivor and FFTA and they don't really count as they are strategy RPGs).

So you can imagine the backlog I have built up! XD

But I think its not too bad to have a lot of games of different genres.
Sometimes its good to have a change, and sometimes there are games that suprise you.

StingingVelvet: Why do I do this?

I like RPGs, shooters and strategy games (read: Civilization games). That is what I like. Why do I keep buying crap from other genres pretending I care? Am I a slave to marketing? Am I a slave to hype? Do I just need a break from my normal routine?

Amazon just emailed me to tell me they shipped The Force Unleashed 2. I bought that? I fucking hate hack n' slash games, why did I buy that? I have Need for Speed pre-ordered? WHY? I don't play racing games.

Why do I do this? Do you do this? Help me stop.
Instead of buying stuff you don't like make some contest, giveaways or just simply give the money to poor people. Or just do this with half of the money you save (or even less).

StingingVelvet: You may be on to something, gaming is my main hobby and I like to be "in the know" about everything. Still, I need to stop... too much money spent on games I play an hour of and then quit.

Aliasalpha: It sounds like what you need is to become a renter. 5-10 bucks for a weekend rental of the latest AAA console game (presuming you HAVE a console, might be a wise long term investment) that you play for an hour has a hell of a lot better return on investment than doing the same but paying 60 bucks

As for my buying habits, if I know its a game I'll like I'll buy it, if its a game I'm uncertain of I'll try a demo and if there's no demo then I won't get it for 6-8 months when its in the bargain bin
I've only bought five games near release day (or even six months after and one of those were actually bought at more than 70% off) in the past 3 years. They were Spider-Man Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010, Transformers War for Cybertron and Castlevania Lords of Shadow. WWE I got because my friend owns a game store and got it for me really cheap (about $15 on release day) and the other four because I'm a huge fan of the characters and mythos.

People say I'm screwing over the developers and such because I don't spend $60 on the games and buy them when they hit $19.99 or used for even less. I see it as not paying the tax on the bragging rights of saying I have it on release day.

Well the whole "supporting the developers so more games like this get made" thing only applies if you like the game/genre enough to want to do that. If you don't really care about waiting months and months to play the game then you likely don't really like that game/genre enough to want to really support it and vote for more like it.

I do have to say part of my problem is I want to support PC gaming and more PC games. Something like Darksiders for instance: I do not like hack n' slash games so I was not interested, but there was still a bit of me saying "wow they ported that to PC, that's cool I should buy it to support that."
I admit I make the same mistakes, buying games I don't really like, though not to such an extreme as you do it appears. I would never buy a racing game for instance because they simply do not interest me, but I did make the mistake of buying Force Unleashed simply because I thought the force powers would make the game fun (I was wrong). If a game has an interesting story or 'cool' gameplay mechanic then I will often buy them even if they are genres I don't really like. Oftentimes I will regret it but sometimes I do find a game within a disliked genre that I do like, for instance I don't normally like FPSs but I do love Half Life 2 (Half Life 1 was meh though, never really saw the appeal in that one), though maybe it's because I love the setting more than I hate the gameplay style.

As to supporting the industry, I will happily buy a indie game, they're cheap enough and good for a laugh. Big name titles though, I expect them to put some serious quality in them as I will not support some junk (I figure it's more harmful to allow poor quality products to thrive, since it gives those megacorps the wrong idea about what we'll accept), which has resulted in me finally deciding to no longer buy games at launch. DA2 I will buy when it's GOTY edition comes out, if I buy it at all, since apparently rushing out to buy it on launch just gets you buggy software and ingame salesmen (refering to DAO there).

PoSSeSSeDCoW: I do this, but only when it's on massive sale for something like $2.50 on Steam. Maybe I'll like it, who knows? But I didn't pay much for it, so it doesn't matter. I find games to be more satisfying when I only buy a new release once or twice a year.
Same here. Actually I haven't bought a single game over $20 in the last couple years. 2.5 years ago I got Sam & Max Season 1 for $35, and that's the most expensive game I bought in 8 years at least.
I do this way too much. Do not like strategy games for the most part yet I buy a lot of them because the concept looks cool and 'maybe' I'll get into it.

Picking up a shooter when anymore I all but hate them because of how saturated the genre has become but 'lets try it anyways.' 5 hours later of mowing down group after group it gets old and I uninstall it.

What I am worst at is really liking a game (like Modded Oblivion) so I try to buy like 5 other games that don't even look that good but are similar and (Gothic 3 and Two Worlds in this case) are so bad they just take up space in my collection.
I have been similarly impulsive recently. I'm trying to force myself to only buy games that are either GOGs that everyone recommends, or I have played and enjoyed the demo.

I'm exactly the same; I think I'm addicted to buying stuff. I've got a shelf-full of Xbox 360 games and I've only ever played about 10 of them ...

Gifting is the way forward. :)
I'm this way about FPSs. I always try them thinking I might like them, but most of the times I'm just disappointed and feel like I've wasted my time on mindless dribble.
