Phc7006: It's far worse than that. Most seeds are patented. To the point that a farmer cannot anymore use the seeds from his own crops but must buy seeds from agritech majors. Coroporations even patented traditional crops in third world countries. In some countries that are dependant on food help , lands are used to grow flowers or luxury vegetables that are sold in our supermarkets. Chech those namibia made fruits in your local branch... Our wonderful short term financial capitalism...

In the meanwhile we dismantle our own farming.

GameRager: They can't tell you you can or cannot grow stuff from the non-GM (natural species) seeds produced by your own crops.......let them try.
Of course, in the US, Europe or Canada, court rulings or laws have prevented corporations to do so. But this- biopiracy , just google that - already happened in South America and Africa.

I was waiting for the "we need patents to make money because otherwise there would be no research" argument. The problem with it is that it's simply not true.
This argument comes from the faulty thinking that progress must come from the private sector. Governments can fund research too.

Also if information was free there would be a race between companies to get a certain product on the market first and for the best price which would greatly benefit people and in the long run make loads of more money to the companies than the patent system.

GameRager: I meant they can't tell a small farmer with not much land what to do with non-patented seed/etc.
Well, fortunately not. But imagine the ***fictious*** situation wich a government starts to enforce such patents, too bad on communities that are considered as potentially hostile to the local government. Lands are reallocated to growers more respectful of intellectual property , maybe because the owners are closer to the regime. And export crops replace local grown food...
I think most people missed the true problem, its not the corps the the patent office employees, I don't know if they just don't care or are morons. They are the ones that are allowing company's like Pfizer to take a drug that is about to lose its patent add Tylenol to it and claim its a new drug new patent. or my favorite stupidity a patent is supposed to protect a specific solution to a specific problem, The best patent application of all times LEGO, they very carefully researched all of the designs that could be used to create lego style blocks and wrote them into the patent. But then you have people like apple (Steve Jobs says that they have patented the using of 2 fingers to manipulate your touch screen) that should be BS and should never have been allowed, the specific implementation used by apple yes the idea it can be done NO. People talking about seeds wake up we are walking around with a time bomb on our hands. a seed company that produces non viable seed stock for cotton one of there patents is that it is herbicide resistant. simple explanation the seeds the farmer buys will grow a plant that can not reproduce the seeds it produces are dead and you can spray it with weed killer and it wont affect it. A farmer bought these seeds and grew a crop the farmer in the next field has been saving his seeds and growing cotton for decades the plants cross pollinated the company found out got a court order to seize and burn his crop wiping him out. The majority of the seeds being sold by the 2 main seed company's are non viable what happens when the start cross pollinating in the wild.
