Yeah, Doom certainly didn't have a good story, but an absolutely brilliant setting . I think that was quite an important and underrated factor in it's success.
Good point. I normally only play story-driven games, but I enjoyed the original Diablo because of its setting. There was such an oppressive atmosphere of dread in those dungeons that I felt immersed in the game, even there was no narrative or characterization to draw me in.

I like a good story, but (IMO) it needs to take a back seat to gameplay. If a game has a great story, but not the gameplay to make you want to play it, then it isn't a game I like.
