We know the week has just began, but we're having a special surprise promo for all of you. Combined with [url=http://www.gog.com/en/news/a_gift_for_gog_beta_users/]the thank you message and gift for our beta stage users, we've launched a special Strategy First promo for everyone. Until Friday, October 22 at 6 a.m. EDT you can grab the games from Strategy First with an up to 50% discount. If you buy all Strategy First games included in the promo or complete the promo pack you'll receive a 50% discount. If you want to buy only selected titles from the promo you'll get a 30% off. drmlessgames: Who's this Startegy First? New publisher that joined Gog?
No, they've been around for quite some time...

Starmaker: Got the whole pack minus Jagged Alliance 2 (already bought in during the first October sale). I'm determined to get every 50% promo pack for the sake of completionism. 62 games in 32 days = not bad. I wish there was a (opt-in) way to show off our game collections.

Speaking of which... Another site I frequent has this "showing off" function. They deal in physical games; not all of them are good, not a single one is cheap. My account page, where I have the option to arrange my collection, is designed in a way to stress the necessity to buy more games to be awesome. It just screams: incomplete! incomplete! even when the games in question are fancy collector's editions long since out of print that I couldn't have shipped to my country due to customs restrictions even if I had found the money.

GOG isn't like that at all. I love the design: it makes buying games and possessing games immensely satisfying, all the beauty of owning a physical edition without the rattling of a CD tray. And a gentle nudge in the right direction: an extra, empty shelf.

Really, computer historians of the far future will be studying three things about this decade:
1) GOG.com. Hoarding shinies: collectability in the digital age.
2) Steam. Selling hot air: pretending DRM is a feature.
3) Bobby Kotick: what measure is a douchebag.
very well said :)

bogdan_vre: Port Rolyale 2 or Patrician 3? Which one should I get (first)?
avatar
DrIstvaan: I always say that if you're new to the genre, get Port Royale 2 first, because that's more... streamlined, so to say. Patrician 3 is a great game, but is somewhat more difficult to get into (and especially master) than PR2.
Thanks. I followed your advice.

You're welcome. Enjoy your Carribean business endeavours!
it isn't the price i am complaining about at all. it's the way they try to tell you ''HEY YOU WANT 50% cuted price game???THEN BUY ALL OF THIS TEN GAMES.
ohhhh You don't want all this game? WELL YOU GET 30% CUT PRICE!!!

Well, I remember some time ago promos were much smaller - thats how I got my both Disciples games - were two for 50% off - you did not need to buy the rest. I miss these times. :(

I think you (and it doesn't only mean you, CommanderMeaty, but everyone who doesn't get the idea behind such promos) approach this from the wrong direction.
Using a fictional monologue, it's more like, "Look here, these games are 30% off! What, you intend to buy everything that's 30% off? Well then, it's 50% for you!"
Really, the prospect of 50% off is more of an incentive for those who have almost all games from the current selection.

What DrIstvaan said. They're not trying to encourage people to buy all ten games, they're trying to get people who already own 8 of them to impulse buy the other two because "it's a better deal."

It is a 30% off sale with added incentive for people who already own most of what's on sale (who would be bitter that they could have gotten the stuff cheaper now).

And even for the few people who do buy all ten games upfront just because they feel like it... well, stuff getting bundled together and sold for cheaper than buying stuff individually is not a new or unique sales tactic (I'm willing to bet you've heard of "buying in bulk" before), and you still have the option of buying things individually. But people who want EVERYTHING can save a little bit more BECAUSE THEY'RE SPENDING A LOT MORE UP FRONT. The only difference between this and most other bundle deals is that it retroactively includes games you've already purchased and deducts them from the price.
