Blizzard struck gold by taking the Warcraft franchise and shifting from RTS to MMORPG, that's a fact. Diablo set the standard for dungeon hacks upon it's release, there's no denying it. Why is Starcraft the only franchise still in it's native format ("Ghost" notwithstanding)? One can only take so much of the Sword & Sorcery setting in an Action RPG before craving lasers and proton cannons and napalm strikes. I myself crave the Sci-Fi setting so much that I subject myself to games like Meridian 4's awful(ly repetitive) "Space Hack", and "Space Siege", which I actually enjoyed (but then I also enjoyed Deus Ex 2: Invisible War, but only through extensive practice of "doublethink").
So, Mr. Browder, making the campaign non-linear is a step in the right direction, but why not take it a step further and remove the RTS element and replace it with ACTION?

I've read somewhere that the level editor provided with Starcraft II should allow in-depth modifications of the game. If that's true, and given the huge community that seems to build up around the game, maybe someone will make your dream come true in the form of a Starcraft II mod ?
Also, I think one of the future expansion packs is to feature an RPG element, via "leveling up" the "Queen of Blades" character after every mission, kinda like if Empire Earth had a "level up" feature for the Hero/Champion characters. I suppose you'd do things like improve unit build speeds, unit defenses (like an Aura bonus) and damage, stuff like that.

I agree with the sentiment, even if I don't exactly agree with it all. I don't think we'll see any kind of Diabo-esque game in the Startcraft universe. First, it would eat into their own Diablo-esque series (I think they call it...I can't recall...). Then, I think they have a bit of development on their plate, and Blizzard is a company similar to Valve in its...dedication to pursuing a project.
But I do love the idea of action RPGs set in a more futuristic/sci-fi environment. There have been several games that have tried this:
Space Hack
Space Siege
Harbinger
Restricted Area
Greed
And few of them have been any good. I'd love to see one actually succeed for once.
Quite frankly, if Blizzard is going to expand Starcraft into other genres, I would really rather see them do almost anything else.
I am not a Starcraft fan, but I would be willing to try, say, a Starcraft FPS, or an Abuse-style Starcraft platformer, or of course, Starcraft Ghost. If Blizzard were to repaint Diablo in Starcraft colors, though, it would be tantamount to self-parody.

You can already spend in-game credits you've earned to upgrade your buildings and troops. It unlocks after Mission 3 of the WoL campaign.
I wholeheartedly approve of genre-crossovers. Especially when it's not just a setting, but the actual play mechanics are transplanted in novel ways. For example, the puzzle game Wik and the Fable of Souls would make a kickass platformer.Natural Selection was great (and C&C renegade could have been been too if the execution was better). A Starcraft RPG would be welcome.
Hey, they already ARE making Warhammer 40k MMORPG! ... oh wait
Someone made a Final Fantasy clone (turn based combat and everything) already, so I could see someone making an ARPG with the map editor.
As for the main game, there aren't enough great RTS games. I wouldn't want to lose one more.
No thanks. No more Action RPG or FPS RPG crap. Starcraft should and most likely will stay as a RTS.

I'm talking about upgrading the "Main Character", like, giving you passive bonuses from the start. Or is that what you meant too?
