Hi,
I wonder ... I do have a game in the Ubuntu distri which in german is called 'Der Ur-Quan Dominanz' which is a very very bad translation of 'The Ur-Quan Masters'. Also the screenshots look quite similar. Is it really the very same game? If not, what's the difference?

It is a version of Star Control 2, made possible by a source release and release of the game assets under a license that allows redistribution. See Wikipedia for more details:

Sure, The Ur-Quan Masters is free and open-source.

Yes, the Ur-Quan Masters is a free port of Star Control II that is included in the Ubuntu distribution. It's contained in the uqm package.
