It seems that, after the initial flop, the guys behind "Star Command" have decided to release the game with the goals it was supposed to achieve in the first place (and which were discarded in the initial release).

They've also discarded the mobile platforms, focusing instead on the PC.

Let's see how it goes.

I'm playing the simpler android version (it was part of a bundle) and I like it very much.. $30 is too much for an alpha but the game overally it has great potential.. I'll track it from time to time to see how it goes.. Let's hope in the end it will be a solid game!

And to be honest, their website is wonderful! :-)
Sigh. I had a lot of hope for Star Command. Hell, I even bought the game on Google Play because I loved the concept so much. But reading over the sordid story of their crowdfunding campaign and development cycle really left me feeling cold about them and their trustworthiness as developers.

I'm really hoping that their original backers won't have to buy the game again, to get what was essentially the game that was first promised to them.

i don't remember a lot about Star Command, other than I remember it being a mobile game that I thought looked cool for a mobile game... so I don't know the controversy surrounding it. But I do think this version looks really cool and I hope it comes to GOG and not just Steam. I would buy it directly from them since its a PC version, but I have gotten to use to having all my games in one place now (ie GOG). Plus I'm not that into buying alphas anymore (Damn you Cube World).

According to a post in their youtube channel, it seems they don't: "Kickstarter Backers: e-mails have been sent with your download links! Check your inboxes for SendOwl!" (at least it appears so)

If that's the case then they're not as big a crooks as the guys behind Elite: Dangerous.

I can't say anything about the 1st KS because I didn't back it but I did back the 2nd @the $25 tier. Late last week I got my alpha code. Might be wrong for the 1st KS though

Voted... let's make this happen people. Thanks.
Wow, this game looks pretty cool! Will there be a GOG version?

In the FAQ they only mention a steam version... someone should tweet/email them or something and ask about bringing the game to GOG after release.

I took a peek at their forum to see if there was any stance on a DRM-free version. The only official response to that one thread was essentially no response.

And that was almost two years back.
I just don't understand what the angry backers think we are doing - we are working on the game. It's like constantly opening the door on a cake that is baking - just chill and relax and it will be done and taste delicious. Patience, patience, patience. This is our first game- call us stupid, call us non cummunicative - but simply understand WE ARE MAKING THIS GAME FOR YOU!

Considering that the game's development seemed to be a mess it's likely that DRM-free alternatives were something they didn't even thought about. I suspect that it was almost a miracle that they managed to release the first version of the game (incomplete as it was).
The game was in a sort of hiatus for an entire year.

It seems that this time around they're doing things with more brains. Considering a DRM-free version may not be an impossibility if that means more money (Steam games are inevitably pirated anyway).
Yeah, who knows? DRM-free doesn't look to be a priority.
Doesn't SendOwl imply that the game is currently DRM-free, at least for alpha, or did I miss something?

Interesting observation.
