Theta_Sigma: @jefequeso The cheesiness of the Stalker movie is part of it's charm to me. :P
jefequeso: I wasn't thinking of that at all, actually. I'm thinking more in terms of the ways that it failed as a story--especially where pacing was concerned. Having one 5 minute panning shot of nothing happening could have been an effective device for creating a mood. Having the entire movie made up of that sort of thing just ended up feeling far too arduous. It didn't help that the entire plot was either unexplained, or was so wrapped up in archaic symbolism and abstraction that it might as well have been gibberish (it's worth noting, though, that I'm REALLY not a big fan of symbolism to begin with).
It really nailed the most important area, though: it had soul. It had an abundant amount of soul and personality, beautiful visuals, and a great atmosphere. It was a treat to watch, even as it was also a chore to watch.
My mistake. Yeah, you have some good points. I like some really weird movies, though. Eraserhead, Tetsuo the Iron Man & Body Hammer, THX 1138, Soylent Green, Freaks, etc... I agree it did have heart. I would love to see a remake of the film though, I mean, I'm not usually big on reboots of films, but sometimes they can be good.
