Okay! Now that I have the attention of you fine ladies and gents, what do you think of spoiler alerts?

What made you decide to open this thread? What were you thinking when you did? What do you think of spoilers in general?

It's not easy looking away from a spoiler when it's something that we really care about. For instance a favorite television show or some alternate ending of a video game. That anticipation that comes from knowing/wanting something that was made hidden for a set period of time can be too much for some. You know you're going to get that piece of candy eventually, but you want it now! But at the same, when you do eat the piece of candy, at times, your tummy hurts.. You take that fun and excitement, the anticipation out of an experience and dull it. At least, thats how I feel..

But theres an exception where I find spoilers necessary. For me, when I see a spoiler I generally try to look away, unless that spoiler was something as a help, something I was searching for in the first place (after beating a game and needed help looking for extras).

Now, how about you what do you think of spoilers? Anything topic related goes here.

Thanks for your time,

- Tim

You're such a spoiler!
curiosity why it was called spoiler alert
usually a thread that spils something has the title of the property thats going to be spoiled in its header

this did not

i generally avoid spoilers for things i like
am indifferent about spoilers about things i dont like or am indifferent about
Save me from reading the book/playing the game

ZFR: Save me from reading the book/playing the game
I kinda agree with this, usually I'll look at spoilers for a game or book I've already finished or for one I have no interest in reading or playing, but am curious to what it is about or why it is considered good by others.

I would say I hardly ever look at spoilers for something I'm really interested in / currently engaged with, but when one pops up in front of you on a forun or something it can be very hard to resist.

That's the third time I have seen this topic in the same year. My thoughts remain the same.

I *was* actually joking, you know...
I think I was spoiled by the lack of spoiler...

lol...

I don't know, there are some games I know I won't play (like Bioshock for example, I have zero interest in it) but people are always talking about, so I sometimes read up the story just to see what it's about and what the fuss is about.

I wouldn't intentionally read spoilers for something which I was going to read/play, but if I know I'm never likely to then I will just read a plot summary if I'm vaguely interested. (I often do it for movies or TV shows, as I'm not really much of a TV/movie watcher, but when an interesting ad comes on I might look up the plot to see what it's about...)
Okay, here's a spoiler for the ending of Octodad:
Octodad: <adamant blurbing> Translation: You have to leave now, and never come back here. Have you ever heard of octopus politics? Neither have I. Octopuses... don't have politics. They're very... brutal. No compassion, no compromise. We can't trust the octopus. I'd like to become the first... octopus politician. Y'see, I'd like to, but... I'm afraid, uh...

Wife: I don't know what you're trying to say.

Octodad: <blubbing> Translation: I'm saying... I'm saying I - I'm an octopus who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the octopus is awake.

Wife: No. no, dear...

Octodad: <blubbing> Translation: I'm saying... I'll hurt you if you stay.

<Wife leaves in tears>

The End

Actually it is very easy for me. In Germany we get TV-shows in free-TV one or two years after the US and it's absolutely no problem for me. Same goes for video games. I usually buy them years after release without reading any spoilers (at least not on purpose). I still don't know anything about the ending of Mass Effect 3 for example.

I opend this thread because I was wondering why someone would open a topic named "spoiler alert" in the general forum without giving any context...
