Hey dol! Merry dol! Ring a dong dillo! Welcome back, doc! :-)

Thanks for devising another quiz, and for the giveaway, of course. And don't get close to the ninja thread, we don't want you to fall in another gifting spiral of destruction... or do we? ;-P
Another of your diabolical contests? Noooo!

Not entering, but thanks for the giveaway, Doc!

I'm still in rehab! ;p
Just sent my answer
Hey everybody,

The quiz is over. Thank you all for playing and for your PM's!

I had a couple of correct answers, YogSo came out as the winner. Congrats! You will receive your prize soon!

The correct answer to the quiz was Noam Chomsky. He's an American linguist and political critic. You can find his Wikipedia page right here.

Here's a full explanation.

Tip 1: What's the phenomenon in this picture called?

This phenomenon is called recursion. Recursion is the process of repeating items in a self-similar way. Chomsky came up with the idea that recursion is one of the core properties of language: it allows for the creation of an unlimited set of sentences with a limited amount of words and rules.

Tip 2: Mens et Manus.

Mens et Manus (Mind and Hand) is the motto of MIT. Chomsky has been connected with the Department of Linguistics & Philosophy at MIT for over 50 years.

Tip 3: In what city can you view the Bronze Italian Stallion?

The 'Bronze Italian Stallion' referred to the bronze statue of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky. This statue can be found in Philadelphia, Chomsky's birthplace.

Tip 4: Who received the Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science in 2010?

The 2010 Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science was won by Michael Tomasello. Tomasello is Chomsky's most important critic.

While Chomsky claims that language is an innate property of the human brain (Universal Grammar), Tomasello thinks that there is no
unique language property and that language follows from other cognitive phenomena.

Thank you all for playing and many thanks to my Chomsky loving girlfriend.

I'm going to bed now, flying to London tomorrow! :D

PS: Sorry I couldn't answer all of your PM's. It's been a busy period, but thank you all for playing! :)

Yay! I got the answer, even if I didn't get the prize.

Congratulations, YogSo, and enjoy!

Thanks again, mrtophat101.
Congratulations YogSo :)
I got the answer right, too

Thanks mrtophat101 and congratulations YogSo
Congratulations! And once more thanks for the interesting giveaway.

I obviously miserably failed. Without 1st clue (recursion, so obvious...) I came to conclusion that the person was Benjamin Franklin. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, died in Philadelphia, and in Tomasello's town of birth, Bartow, there's the The Benjamin Franklin Holland House but I admit that was weak connection.

I can't wait next quiz giveaway. I'll try to find better connections. ;)
Congrats YogSo. I didn't get the answer correct unfortunately. But great giveaway! I learned a thing or three while trying to figure it out.
My answer was not correct and it was the first clue that confused me. Obviously, it is an example of recursion but if you want to be more specific it should rather be called Droste effect (a picture appearing within itself). I combined it with the name Michael Tomasello and ended up with Michael Droste. I believe he lives in Philadelphia too, but I must admit - Mens et Manus didn't fit here.

Nevertheless it was fun so thanks for the contest and congratulations YogSo!
Ohhh, thank you, Mr. Top Hat! :-) And thanks as well to all for the congratulations. I didn't expect to win this one since I wasn't 100% sure of my answer.

In case anyone is curious, I chose the Cossacks Anthology and Heroes of Annihilated Empires as the prizes, so I'll have my strategy and RPG needs covered for a long time. :-)

Thanks again to the amazing and generous community here on GOG. I'm looking forward to reaching 100 rep... ;-)
