Omerta: City of Gangsters, a 1930s mafia simulation with ruthless tactical turn-based combat and wonderful era-appropriate score, is available now 50% off, for only $19.99 with the DLC included free. This offer ends on April 8 at 10:59 PM GMT.

Omerta: City of Gangsters is an atmospheric game, a game where you battle it out tactically and strategically as you attempt to wrest control of the city from the other mafioso. It's a game that is more than the sum of its parts, and here's our top 6 reasons why you should check it out:

1. The atmosphere. The atmosphere of early 1920s, brutal gangsters' world, and brilliant soundtrack should appeal to all the fans of the era so rarely depicted in video games.

2. Visual presentation. Graphics, art style, pictures, portraits, maps, and the city all look great. And you do not need a high-end machine to play it.

3. Fast-paced combat. As Tim Stone fromPC Gamer wrote: "Shotgun blasts shatter furniture and send clustered foes reeling. Molotov cocktails loop through windows. Hoodlums lean from cover cradling chattering Tommy guns."

4. Engaging Story mode. The campaign has a very well driven story with some twists and turns, interesting characters (with two additional henchmen from the DLCs), and wonderful cutscenes.

5. Better than Ever. The game has been patched already and a big update with new maps, more customization options, and additional "Iron Man" difficulty was promised by Kalypso.

6. Free DLC. It's now $19.99 and with two DLCs: The Bulgarian Colossus and The Con Artist for FREE for everyone who has purchased the game.

Sold? Great, then get Omerta: City of Gangsters right now for $19.99 and get all the available DLC packs free.

All of you who have purchased Omerta: City of Gangsters from GOG.com will be able to get The Con Artist DLC for free. Just add it to your cart for $0.00 and check out! If you have purchased this DLC separately, please contact our support and you will get a code good for any $5.99 game for free.
I've played the original release of this game right through, and while I did enjoy it somewhat (the last 2 levels were particularly good) I can't wholeheartedly recommend it. It is just so mediocre compared to many of the classic games you can buy on this site for much less.

If you want good turn based strategy with strategic and role playing elements, then play Jagged Alliance 2. If you've already played JA2 then play it again. Once you are sick of it, play Silent Storm. Once you are sick of that, you should probably even get incubation before this one.
Do keep in mind, if you're contacting Support about the $5.99 gift code in exchange for the DLC purchase, that it's 1:30 am here in Warsaw. They'll get back to you tomorrow. :)

But you are awake! Why are support slacking off? :P
Bitching about the pricing / DLC aside, anyone else got opinions on the game itself... kinda tempted by this... convince me to take the plunge / stay well clear...

Like I wrote 2 posts up...

I recommend you stay clear unless its costs $1 and you've played every other game in the genre on this site over and over again and just want something simple and new.

I'm awake because if--for some reason--the sale didn't launch on time, I was the person whose job it was to set off all of the alarms.

I don't think it's quite as grim as PMIK describes it. The tactical combat I found to be quite satisfying; the strategic map play is a bit thin, though.

Navagon: Is this an about face in light of the DLC backlash and poor sales?
avatar
johnki: I don't think that is entirely what's up. I saw a post on the Steam forums when I checked for opinions right now where an Omerta dev/rep said they were fixing the game up, including more maps for MP and an AI for Sandbox mode that was in response to the backlash.

This might just be a marketing push for the new update, which was said to be due soon at the latest.

Licurg: I think the lack of a sandbox mode

johnki: It has a sandbox mode. It just apparently doesn't have any opposition.
What do you mean, has no opposition ?

Concept/location is nice, but it's really overly simplistic, there's not a lot of challenge to the city map game, just building stuff with no real way of messing it up unless you *seriously* mismanage. Then repeat it on the next map.

It wouldn't be that bad but the combat is lackluster. The maps are pretty bad to the point where places you can actually 'hide' behind objects are few and far between and almost never where you'd want them or even expect them to be. And even if you find one the enemy just runs up to you and starts shooting, ignoring the point of cover alltogether.

I'd say it's an ok game to pass the time with as I like the setting, but maybe for $10 at best, as the city part of it feels like a cellphone game and the combat just doersn't make up for it.

Look for the game on TB's WTF!? on youtube. His impressions are pretty balanced compared to most....
I do believe GOG is once again extending the olive branch over this issue. When something like this is released on the site the way it was, especially when it's up against what I consider to be far superior titles (and I say this without ever having played Omerta, I just know) it's going to suffer. And this is a result of that suffering. I can buy Omerta, a game which even having never played I'm already disgusted with or I can put that money towards new old releases here and other promos. Unless, there is a sudden turn of events to convince me otherwise. For instance, people purchasing this and actually enjoying it; I see no reason for myself to invest in this title.

Try the DLC experiment again with another, better title GOG.

Cannot sleep, 1:20 am here. And this is what I wake up too?
Not bad GOG, I am glad to see the game is now at a more reasonable 'new game' price.

See kids, whining that a game is too far over priced and with expensive DLC can lead to better things... now, do I pick this up, and can I afford this right now is my next question...
Gonna download the demo tonight to see if this thing even runs on my PC then I'll take it from there. It couldn't be any worse than Gangsters.

Oh wait, I think some people liked that game. :P
Unfortunately, the strategic layer was too thin. There were lots of little decisions about resources, but none of them were ever important. You could just wait around for money to accumulate and get past "quest" requirements that way. I suspect this part needed much more balancing than they had time for. XCOM, for example, has a brutal strategic layer where almost every decision is meaningful. The strategic layer also didn't really connect to the tactical layer.
That's a pretty nice offer. I'm tempted.
Despite the initial bad press, I wonder how much if at all the game's improved. I do believe in redemption, as I've had terrible games at launch that have been patched into something quite reasonable.
I purchased the game as part of the pre-order because it looked pretty good and have played it through 1 and a half times. (using different gang members did not offer enough of a difference in play to keep me interested all the way through the second playthrough)

I WAS dissapointed overall, but not to the point that i was mad or upset. the campaign story was interesting enough, and the missions small enough that it was a good time killer game if i had 45 minutes or an hr to kill before going to work.

The fact that the DLC was priced for $5 annoyed me but making the two that are out free now and the updates promised to improve the AI look interesting enough that i would recomend the game for the 19.99 sale price. I would still not recomend it for full price even with the DLC"s included as even with them and the planned updates it is just not a $40 game.
