I don't know if this is good news or not because I have never played one Space Quest game during the years I have been alive on this Earth. Is the Space Quest series like the King's Quest or Quest For Glory series?

Comedy sci-fi with the tradtional Sierra style. You die often and if you like the style of humour, you'll laugh often. First three are parser based, the last three are point and click.

Do you have to play the first 3 games in order to understand what is going on in the last 3 games?

Not really, there are some references and the series follows Rogers 'career' but you can pretty much skip the first three games if you're not a huge fan.

evilguy12: Same here, didn't like anything Sierra though.

bazilisek: Not even Quest for Glory or Gabriel Knight? I can't stand most of the Sierra games, but those two series are among the best adventure games ever made, IMO.

I agree about Space Quest, though. Unfunny and cruelly designed is just too much.
Not actually played those, which are good ones to pick up? I was kinda put off by how boring, unfunny, terribly designed and written Kings Quest and Space Quest was.

For QfG, I'd recommend the VGA remake of the first one (included in the GOG package) followed by the free remake of the second; you'll quickly find out if you like the style (RPG/adventure hybrid) or not. Alternatively, go straight for the QfG2 remake; the individual games are mostly self-contained, even though they are parts of one big story. Basically, QfG2 and 4 are the best, followed by 1. QfG3 is a filler entry in the series in more ways than one, and 5 is definitely skippable.

With Gabriel Knight start with the first, which is a traditional point and click (though a lot less evil than Sierra's games usually are). All three of the games are very good, but you have to overlook some terrible technological decisions in the sequels – GK2 is in pretty bad FMV (admittedly among the best examples of FMV games, but that still isn't saying much) and GK3 sports a very poor 3D engine.
I quite enjoyed the Space Quest series, although they are a prime example of Sierra's infamous "save early, save often" design principle. I encountered several dead ends where I had to re-play a sizable chunk of the game and there are lots of ways to die. So if you get easily frustrated, this series is not for you.

For anyone looking to get into the series, I suggest starting with SQ1 Remake (which I think is included with the SQ bundle on Steam -- why not here GOG?) or SQ4.
One minute to go as I type. Congrats to the two guys and the fans for making it happen.
Over the finish line and with rubber to spare. That extra should take care of the kickstarter fees, at least.
This makes me ever so happy. Tex Murphy, LSL, Crowe and Murphy, Jane Jensen, Wasteland 2 and Double Fine. Next year looks like to be the best game year in ages.
