I own Dark Star One, Freespace 2, X2, X3 Gold Edition & Parkan II.

Every single one of them has been a monsterous pain in the ass to learn how to play and the dog fights always seem to go on for fifteen minutes of chasing each other around in circles while trying to knock away titanium hull armor with spitballs. Even worse is when shield regeneration is a factor - the AI will just do figure eights way out of your range until they're that at maximum health again.

Each one of these games, however, has a feature that if all features were combined in every game dogfighting would be 210% more enjoyable.

ie; The option to automatically maintain ship speed with locked on targets in Freespace 2 should have been a common feature copy catted in Dark Star, X and Parkan.
I am pretty sure, that Darkstar one can do that.

But i only played it for few hours.

It's been a long time since I played it, but I believe you're right. I'm pretty sure you could. At least, I can recall no frustration on that account.

If you're a fan of space adventure games, I assume you've played Star Control 2 aka The Ur-Quan Masters? If not, please download it and do so at your earliest convenience. It's free, and it's brilliant :-)

I don't know, I found X-Wing and Terminal Velocity to be good in that respect. But those aren't quite the same genre if I'm tracking.

Wow. Thanks a lot for that! I remember Star Control 2 back in the nineties. I wanted it but couldn't afford it - then I forgot that it existed until now.

Apparently work on this project end back in 2008 with version 0.62 - is this a finished full-on production?

I'm half way through a game and I haven't found any problems.

It is. It's been fully playable since I learned of it, and that was at version 0.3. They've added quite a few features since then though. It has a lot more features than the original now, partly because the original source code that was released was for the 3DO version. Since that version differed from the PC version in a number of ways, the PC features have been put back in, and most differences can now be configured to use either the PC or 3DO way of doing things. So it's the best of both worlds. And it's an absolutely fantastic game. It's an odd mixture of adventure / space combat / resource gathering with a few RPG elements thrown in. It sounds messy, but it just works.
