johnki: There's a rumor going around that it'll be "gamer+". That'll go over so well. The elitism there isn't evident at all.
I am waiting for NewGamer+ :P

fronzelneekburm: their little PAX panel tomorror (you know, the one where they supposedly will announce their new term for gamers on Monday)

catpower1980: ?!?!? What? I missed that one, I would be glad if you could provide me a link to this "project of announcement". If they really do that, I think we'll reach new heights in ridiculessness (not even sure that word exists ^o^).

Crosmando: The whole "'Gamer' is dead thing" is basically just the SJW's admitting defeat, they realize that the vast majority of gamers are male and don't care about their political agenda, they just like playing video games.

They are nothing but a tiny minority. If you outed internet connections in San Francisco, London, New York and Melbourne all this SJW crap would disappear overnight.
Actually, interestingly enough, adult women are now the largest demographic in gaming.

Not to oppose the stupidity of the whole gamer thing though.

chean: The study looks interesting, but the author of that dailydot piece unfortunately looks to be another wearing an agenda on her sleeve, with sensationalist, one-sided article titles like these: "4chan hacks and doxes Zoe Quinn's biggest supporter" (the article itself frequently uses 'allegedly', but the title blames 4chan as if it were fact... leaving aside that the evidence rather suggests that Fish "hacked" himself, and his credibility being, excuse the pun, fishy at best) / "The sexist crusade to destroy game developer Zoe Quinn" etc.
I agree, here is a link to the study itself if you are interested: http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2014.pdf
Pretty neat though, definitely big news :)

Reaper9988: So what games have women been playing all these years, now that we know they haven't just been wasting time trying to get their Facebook friends to give them free lives on Candy Crush?

Casual computer games, mostly. The report ranks online and mobile puzzle games, board games, trivia games, and card games as coming in second to the boom in social games, which more than doubled in popularity between 2012 and 2013.

Am I the only one seeing a discrepancy in this statement ? Candy crush is a casual game...............
That's the problem with these studies always.

Hell I mean my 65 year old mother plays Zuma once in a while.
That is where most opposition lies, anyway, though personally I'm not too sure why anyone would see this as a threat. It's simply a change in demographic, as the industry changes according to trends, the demographic will, but a lot of people seem to take it personally. If their demographic isn't the largest anymore, as if there is some kind of cookie we all get when we are in the 'spotlight.' The spotlight being of course, the target for intensive marketing and money-grabbing, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Anyway, when you talk about the games industry and which games are played by which demographic, you take into account all games, regardless of anyone's personal opinion, of what a 'game' is. Casual games are beginning to take over, no wonder a demographic that tends to enjoy casual games more (that being, adult women, not just women in general) is becoming the majority. Makes sense to me.

Hey my mom plays Zuma too! high five!

Reaper9988: I don't really see a problem with casual games having a bigger impact. Honestly I'm happy my mom ie plays computer games now too.
Goes a long way of showing her people playing games aren't weird:P
My problem with it is that the same statistics are used to ty to influence the games where the core audience is largely unchanged.
Or attack said games

.
attacking is never cool, learn the facts, form an opinion, open a discussion. <3

Piranjade: As a woman who plays computer games and whose female friends also all play computer games, the answer to that question is: Everything.
We have all different tastes and play all different kinds of games.

But we don't talk about it so much.

We're rarely members of clans that include people we don't know personally and if we are we often don't say that we're females. For that reason we also avoid team speak if possible.

There are some gamer girls who tout out their gender in the hope of an advantage but mostly gaming with dudes gets annoying pretty quickly if they know that you're a female gamer.

And when I read this thread... I feel a bit tired at times. And maybe a bit out of place in this forum.
Your opinion here is one that nearly every female games enthusiast shares, the feeling of having to prove yourself to be worthy of a "boys" club. The thing is, it is no longer a boys club, we are at a point in time where everyone games somehow. Men, women, children, adults, grandparents even, are gaming! It's a beautiful thing, and the difficult part is that, for a long time, gaming was something separate from the mainstream where people could go to enjoy a common interest, and now that it is becoming overwhelmingly mainstream, there is a huge storm between many of the major gaming demographics. Which is what you are seeing in the recent articles that are sweeping over the interwebs. Also remember that the industry is quite young, and while we will see a settling in this massive wave of crap sometime in the future, we can't be sure of when exactly. There has to be growing pains, but the problem lies with the fact that these growing pains are fueled by internet anonymity and uninformed, angry, intolerant people. Now more than ever everyone and anyone can express their opinions, no matter how vulgar or downright threatening.

EDIT: I also want to add to my point that just because more women play 'casual games or facebook games or whatever, and that it is those women who are pushing the female demographic to become larger than the male demographic, doesn't mean there is a larger demographic of female 'core' gamers as well. Though another issue about this is that it shouldn't matter what games you play, you are still contributing to the gaming community by playing games. Any games, and no one should have to prove their worth by anyone else's standards.

But know that you aren't alone, and don't stop enjoying your hobby just because some people can't share 'their' toys.
