Desura, in case you guys didn't know, is this neat little Game/Mod/Patchfiles/etc conglomerate of cool that seems to be on it's way to being a better alternative(with time) to some of the other, less liked digidownload stores......and it's not just a store, but a mod database in development, and more.

It's like a gaming community of sorts, similar to steam I guess.......but possibly better, and with all sorts of things to check out.

I tried installing Halfquake Sunrise on it, but every time I tried to launch it through Desura, it would claim there were corrupted files. Oddly enough, after I failed to launch it through the thing I downloaded and installed it with, the game appeared on my Steam list and worked through there.

It's more convenient to install mods through Desura, but the fact that I can't just double-click the mod in their client annoys me.
It still needs a lot of work.
The client isn't very user friendly IMO, registering the Humble Bundle for instance.. I couldn't find where to do this and just used the link on the Humble Bundle page.
And when it was registered, it said I had no games until I restarted the client.
Other people have already commented on the fact that the pricing on games on Desura is a bit steep.

So all in all, I'm not terribly impressed yet.
I gave it a test by redeeming the Humble Bundle 2.

Honestly, not a fan. It has a horrifyingly confusing interface (hard to tell what you own and what you don't, and where to download stuff) and couldn't even redeem the code in-client.

THat being said, if they work on making it useful for installing mods, it might be worth booting up again at some point.
Well it originally started out as an attempt to make a program driven mod database to replace some of moddb's functionality and drive interest in modding......so I can see why it lacks in the tacked on areas. Hopefully it'll get better.
hey guys, Scott from Desura here. Thanks for the feedback - we are brand new so we are working through everything here and encourage you to stick with us and keep giving Desura a shot.

Regarding the bundle, we actually created a special page to activate it: http://www.desura.com/bundle it just seems most people are going straight into the app.

@TheCheese33 you should be able to double click mods in desura, have you tried "verifying" it?

And yes we shall work on user-friendliness, we have a redesign coming in a few months which should help a huge amount.
No Mac client? That's soooo 2009.

Something is wrong with your link, it's leading to a 404 error.
The service itself sounds great. The client is somewhat awkward, but it's still very new so that's understandable. I'll definately be following Desura for a few months at least to see how it evolves.

Thanks for the HIB activation. I probably wouldn't have discovered Desura otherwise.

The same thing happened to me when I installed and launched Nightmare House 2 through Desura. Just to be sure I check the file integrity of HL2 and the Source SDK on Steam and launched the mod through Desura and it worked the second time.
Maybe I'm missing something here but if this is supposed to be a mod database, why are there so few mods on it? HL2 had like 10 mods or less and I saw no indication if more were hidden in another page.

Cool.........thanks for providing feedback on what I thought was just ging to be an off the cuff informal little thread about a new gaming/modding service.

So, what role do you play on the Desura team, if I may ask? And how did you find out about this thread/site?

And btw....nice service. I hope it gets as big if not bigger than moddb someday and becomes the place to be for modding maybe even. :)

Supposedly they're going to be adding more mods as they go along......plus I think users can upload mods they've made as well. Check back each week I guess and see how it goes.
