Having never played a MOBA game such as League of Legends or Heroes Of Newerth before I looked into these games and they did pique my intrest, they seem like good fun and very tactical however one thing really stood out, The Community.

Is it that bad? I don't really like playing with people who rage all the time but at the same time i do want to see if i can get into these games.

Are they very newb freindly though? I don't want to have to dive into a match straight away and have people yell at me because it would probably make me quit, i play games to relax and well that's kind of counter-productive.

What are you thoughts and tips? Should i Play LoL first and how can i learn to be decent at these games without having people rage at me?
Here's a short guide:
1. Install Warcraft 3 and expansion
2. Join DotA game
3. Repeat 2 until you find a game that starts without you getting kicked
4. Act like you're French

Most of the players are still going to act like punks, but they seem to leave the French be. Also, you're not going to understand anything anyone says. Something like "ss 1 zip zappa benny bot" is utterly incomprehensible, but it means that they think they know their job. Just nod and act like you understood. They'll know whether you nod or not: it's magic.
MOBAs are mostly competitive games, and GOG is the WRONG place to ask anything about competitive gaming. So prepare to receive replies that MOBAs and MMOs 'have' the worst communities.

Anyway, in reality, nobody expects that you suck, and if you suck, prepare to get shitted at. Nobody wants a loser on their team (no offense, just how competitive gaming works).

But there are many people who like to play these games non-competitively, you'll just have to search through the various hubs / pubs / server groups / whatever.

And if you're after relaxed gameplay, stay away from competitive gaming.

kavazovangel: And if you're after relaxed gameplay, stay away from DOTA/MOBA
Fixed ;)

Seriously. If you, like me, have a bad temper, stay the heck away from DOTA.

Not really. Nobody in Starcraft 2 would wait for you to play relaxed and be building your base for 30 minutes, they'll try to destroy you in 5. Same thing with most eSports-featured FPSes, you'll get head-shot as soon as they see you.
League of Legends has an alright community until you reach higher levels. Then people yell at you for making tiny mistakes as if everything's your fault. It does have tutorials and allows practicing against computer opponents to get better, though.
Not sure about Heroes of Newerth, because every game I tried to play I got kicked.

Also, MOBA is kind of a misnomer in my opinion. It stands for 'multiplayer online battle arena', but that can fit into any sort of online game, like Quake 3 and TF2, due to them having online multiplayers and taking place in arenas where players battle.

Ah alright. When I saw "relaxed gameplay", I had a different impression in mind, namely of the "peer pressure" kind. I've played quite a few online team games, and none were as anal as the general DOTA community.
So I have played a lot of these types of games and here is how I'll put it. First, I am on the side that says MOBA does not fit genre well it is a term coined by Riot for whatever reason they like so ya. Secondly, yes the community is that bad in general in all the games even LoL well to a lesser extent it is still there. Part of this is due to the games having a very steep learning curve on a team based game where at some points of the game 1 mistake can mean death and game over for the whole team. If you really want to get into this genre of game my best recommendation is to get a group of people to play with that you know and not deal with the community till you feel more comfortable with the game and its mechanics like last hitting, item builds, and know what all the heroes can do. I know all heroes it sounds crazy when there are like 70+ in these game all with 4 or so skills but kinda becomes necessary to play at a ok level even after all this be prepared to get flamed when you make mistakes or just have a bad game in general. Also I play HoN mostly and if you really want to I would be will to teach you a bit when ever I'm on, same username here as over there.

tldr: play with some people you know otherwise it is probably best to stay away from someone who plays these games.
I guess you could try playing dota a little bit to see if you like it or not. I'm assuming you own wc3

if you dont have wc3, Heroes of newerth went f2p a little while back, so you could give it a go.

just ignore the raging kids and get some friends to play with you :)

hope you enjoy.
Rise of Immortals is newest in MOBA genre. But i think League of Legends has the largest user out there and the community is very good.
League of Legends is my favorite, and probably has the most noob friendly community out of all the ones I played. You can practice against bots which helps you get used to the game, and you can learn a lot by looking up guides on sites like MOBAFire.

Don't get too upset if you aren't good at first. It takes a while to get used to some of the intricacies of the genre, but you will have a blast once you achieve a level of competence. Definitely pick a hero you like, and stick with them as often as possible.
