Delixe: I like the part where you click log in and it lets you input your ID then it immediatley logs you out. Microsoft are saving my time and theirs.
Its back to doing that? XD

I remember it doing that to me a LOT during the Universe at War: Earth Assault beta a few years ago. :P

Miaghstir: Right, no points. Instead it's got "funds", which is the same thing with another name.
What? you know you linked to steam not GFWL right?

You also know you don't have to use the steam wallet thing at all right? I've bought plenty of things (including DLCs) and I didn't even know that option existed at all till just now. You have the option to just buy it for the exact amount, same as you would from any store or any other site.

Anyway, GFWL on fallout 3 was pointless, I never created an account or anything and basically ignored it. Unfortunately you had to use it for dawn of war 2 multiplayer.... it was not THAT bad but there was really nothing good about it. It seemed largely pointless and inferior to steam in every way.
GFWL might be complete shit but look at it this way

They have Deus Ex and Thief Deadly shadows

while GoG doesn't

Precisely my point, contradicting what volcatius claimed. The points are there in both but aren't necessary in either system, and GFWL can most of the time be ignored (except for multiplayer), unlike Steam which needs to be run at all times.

There are things which makes Steam the better solution, but the ones mentioned are not it.
At this moment I've spend my hard earned money on Starcraft II , Section 8 , dawn of war 2 and assassins creed bearing the title GFWL.
Not a single one went without the hassle.
Patches going ape , keys not being accepted,

DoW2 it was actually the worst. In the middle of a game i got "redirected" to the title menu losing a day each time. Guys who played it know that you miss out on valuable time and deployments to gain the best items.

Solution : Place them neato games on the shelf to stare and drewl at.
Then mount an iso in certain iso accepting software installing certain adapted patches :)
And there you go....solved. I don't think i can be labeled a pirate this way.
I bought a copy and therefore have the right to enjoy the game.

That's why I'd rather wait a few years and buy them here on GoG. Pay , download , install , play.

Bloody Bill Gates should be shafted!!!

Ah, apologies, then. I misunderstood what you were saying.

G4WL did not let you save because you refused to create an account while Steam does not let you even start the service and thus not the game itself if you don't have an account there. With G4WL you can at least "demo" the game.

I do not care for MP mode in any game, so for me Steam is equally pointless in games like FO: New Vegas, at least G4WL feels less sluggish than Steam at times (especially during times when the load on the servers is heavy). My personal experience is with G4WL being a less annoying than Steam.

I never understood while you are forced to install 3rd party software even for singleplayer-only games like Fallout. Both services severely lack in protection.

40 dollars to get a game, and you don't even give me a fucking cardboard box? Digital format ftw, indeed....

Let's pirate 'em all, I say....

That's optional (and useless imho) and was added later than any other payment option.
I always paid with paypal or click&buy.
And MS even tries to hide the actual costs (1 point costs 1,20 euro).

Yes, the Steam wallet is optional, precisely like the Microsoft points.

Please show me a purchase where the Microsoft points are mandatory, and I'll accept your reasoning. Personally I haven't seen any product that could ONLY be paid for with Microsoft points, all have stated a monetary cost and accepted credit cards as well.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaand

the site is currenty down, lol

It wasn't optional till the relaunch. I had to buy MS points to get Fallout 3 DLC. No alternative.
This concept didn't work, since most PC players weren't stupid enough to buy non convertible MS points in blocks.

Steam introduced the "funds" after they had already other payment options - PayPal, credit cards, click&buy (bank transfer).

It's Microsoft's last desperate attempt to get some money from the PC market they practically abandoned.

My experiences with GFWL... Let's see. In Kane and Lynch it worked ok, but was an unwieldy and annoying piece of crap that didn't even have proper keyboard support. The interface was a straight port of XBL with "press X button" and all.

I had to use it again in Red Faction: Guerrilla and while the interface was slightly improved it was still kind of annoying and consoley and the worst part was that the auto update did not work, period. So I had to look it up on Google and found out I needed to manually download and install it in order to get it to work. Finally, every fricking time I started the damn game it would give me a loading screen for the main menu, then when I tried to start playing it would prompt me to log in to GFWL at which point it would return me to the main menu again and make me select whatever I had just done over again. Not a major issue but still more annoying than Steam.

I suppose if you're used to using XBL and not steam or something than XBL for windows seems better.

Oh yes, and another downside to GFWL is that it's run by Microsoft whose evils against PC and computer gaming in general are too numerous to count as opposed to Steam which was created by Valve who are one of the few mainstream developers that still gives a crap about the PC.
