It also gives you protection from toxins, radiation, extreme temperatures etc etc, but of course not entirely, you just die few seconds later :P.

it's also responsible for HUD , it monitores your health, etc etc.
Guys, jeez, so many misleading answers, tsk tsk.

Two kinds of power: the one used for the flashlight, which recharges when said flashlight is off. Second acts as armor and is rechargeable by picking up batteries and using HEV stations.
Not rocket science. Or theoretical physics, for that matter. :P

real.geizterfahr: I think you're confusing Half Life with Half Life 2?! In Half Life 2 you have one "pool" for energy (flashlight), oxygen (while diving) and endurance (sprinting). In Half Life it is only used for the flaslight, whereas you have an own bar for oxygen. And in both of the games all thoses things don't have to do anything with the shield energy of your suit.
And in Half-Life 2: Episode Two, they separated the flashlight and sprinting pools because of the cave sections.

It's funny, though. One wouldn't expect this thread to last this long.

you're explaining game mechanics, we're explaining what suit is in Half-life world :P

xxxIndyxxx: 3. The same power (flashlight) is used for breathing under water I think, so when using a flashlight under water, you have less oxigen, but if you lose health from drowning you gain it back when you are out of the water.

But I could be wrong. The last time I've played Half Life was... uhm... long ago^^
I could be wrong, they tuned those mechanics every game so i could be wrong.

mrtophat101: Stupid Valve, not giving me a manual. ;p
Play the tutorial available from the main menu. It should teach you everything you need to know.

FraterPerdurabo: Sprinting? There's the double jump, but no sprinting IIRC.
There is that acceleration mode for long jumps that reminds me of a sprint+jump.
