I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I got with shadows in Skyrim.

Basically, they do not update properly around characters and objects, and I get strange full blocks of shadows on walls.

Example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juSBYWAqNWc&feature=youtu.be

I have tried almost all fixes I can find online to improve shadows, both .ini tweaks and various mods, without success. The strangest thing is that it worked nicely half a year ago, I just picked it up again today as I wanted to try to pay a mage for a change...

If anyone knows what the cause may be and how to fix it, I would be eternally grateful.

Try using Realistic Lighting Overhaul. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/30450

It changes some properties of the default lighting, but it's still using it without any real tweaks.
Yeah, but I have found that it helps with some shadow problems. I don't know why, but since the guy says he has tried all the ini tweaks and stuff he has found by searching, I thought I'd give him an idea he hasn't tried.
You could try using the Skyrim Configurator to see if any of the advanced shadow settings help. Also you can try turning the different AA options on and off.
And lastly you could try running it in windowed mode to see if that helps (there are utilities that allow you to use full screen windowed mode, but you can try it without first).
Other than those basic things, I don't really know anything that might help.

Edit: There also used to be a striping shadows fix on the Nexus, not exactly the issue but if you've tried everything else.. perhaps?

Cheers, I will try the configurator.

Right now I have deleted everything and am now in the middle of downloading it again so see if a fresh install will help.

Well, a clean install seemed to have done the trick. The settings are identical and I got the exact same mods installed, but it runs just fine now. I have no idea what caused the problem...

A file corruption during the installation?

It must have happened during a update in that case. I just started playing from my old game, which worked nicely before. Strange.

Next time you hit a strange bug, try verifying files via Steam (it's in properties.) It has helped me a few times.
