Honestly, I don't see this as an issue.
What people seem to forget is that DLC is a smaller, cheaper, digitally attained version of an expansion pack.
Way back when, people fronted, what, $40 for the Brood War expansion to Starcraft that literally only gave like 3-4 new units to each race and a new campaign which pretty much means a few more player vs AI maps with a story loosely tacked on. And they were happy to pay it!
And now, when they're asked to pay $5 for a more prominent feature that comes out 2 years after the game is released (and expansion packs are usually still being released at that point), they're complaining about it.
I just think it's odd.
EDIT: I also think it's odd that less people complain about paying $5 for 3 new outfits than they do about paying $5 for a multiplayer expansion. :P
