I have noticed some great brains in this forum for getting stubborn games working - has anyone here had any luck getting this particular classic going? I once managed to make it run, but never succeeded getting it going with sound and it crashed so much I gave up.

I really wish GOG would get it but I realise that may be a vain hope at this stage, so I have to persist getting my old CD copy going.
I never had any problems running this game with win 7, but I did a quick search and found this

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-gaming/windows-7-how-to-make-simcity-3000-run/22389ede-dda9-475f-99ea-3d7410ae7be0

in the 6th answer there are some instructions and a download patch. The only problem with this is it seems sketchy as hell to me, but if you want to play it and you actually own the cd then I wouldn't worry too much about no cd patches.

I hope you get it running, nothing is more miserable than wanting to play a game but it won't run.

edit: sorry, couldn't get hyperlink to work for some reason.

Worked for me "out of the box" a couple years ago. Advice above seems solid.

Not sure about people on this forum being good at getting games running! I still can't play Infernal Machine or Shadows of the Empire... :(
Nice, thanks for the help. I spent days googling and somehow missed that one.
I will give it a try this morning!

Strange how "hit and miss" some of these older games seem on Win 7... works for some people with no tweaking, some with compatibility mode and some never at all.
