Since pirate games seem to be all the rage nowadays, I remembered how much fun I had with the Pirates of the Carribean game, that wasn't really a PotC game, but the second entry of Sea Dogs with it's title changed.

In the same way, I heard that the developer later created a new series "Age of Pirates" that is also basically the same as Sea Dogs, and that also has two games.

So, does anybody have any experience which game in this series is the best? I heard for example that Age of Pirates 2 is supposed to be buggy, but on the other side PotC also wasn't perfect.

basically, what I want to know, if something changed in the series significantly, or if they are all pretty much the same game except with some graphics and feature updates.

And it looks to me like all the games are DRM-free, at least in their retail release, correct?
I played that PotC game!

Wow! I thought I was the only one. Only played it once though, and yeah, we need more pirate themed games. AC4 barely counts.

I'd like to hear people's opinions on these too so I'm bumping the thread. By the way I tried to at least look them up and apparently Age of Pirates 1 got a supermod that greatly improves the game, and I only found one review on AoP 2, from IGN, so basically about as useful as a scribble on a bathroom wall. So who knows? Maybe their worth trying now.
I have both the original Sea Dogs and it's sequel Pirates of the Carribean. I loved the first one, but I barely played the second. There is also a third game in the series, but with it's icky, nasty, overally obtrusive DRM. So I gave it a pass.

Well, as far as I know, PotC was pretty widespread. At least it#s brought up on the Risen forums all the time on how to make a good pirate RPG. :p

It seems to be that the Age of Pirates series never got much widespread attention, and while you can find some reviews, I would really be interested in the opinions of goggers, especially in how they compare to the previews entries.
Sadly, I see that the retail copies are really expensive and overpriced (due to rarity, I assume?). Not gonna pay 50€ for a game that's several years old.
As far as I can see, it's not even available as a digital download. I don't even see much hope that's it's coming to gog.com.
The answer is: Sea Dogs.

Would you mind to elaborate why you think so?

Was that the game with the moneylender dialogue bug where you could borrow infinite money but only had to repay the first amount back?

I don't know, the game wasn't mine so I was able to only play it shortly.

First of all, it has the best story of them all, and the best representation of the corsairs / pirates era.

I liked sea battles the most in that one. Pirates of the caribbean too much wanted to be "omg like the movie", and ended up being rather weak.

Age of Pirates is an ok game, but doesn't have interesting story at all. But it's the best looking game of them all, if that's important to you.

I can't elaborate more, because I played them years ago, for the last time ;p

Age of Pirates had a pretty sweet idea but the game never really had much of a story and had absolutely no end unless you took over every single last port - And this made the entire effort put into the game feel wasteful and useless.

So

Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships perfected AoP, gave it a solid story and an ending.

Just about six months ago GamersGate still had it on their UK site.
Now it's gone.

I have a feeling that you might be able to snag the ISO from FBI Bay with out too much retaliation however.

Ah okay, thanks. I mean, story is very important in most RPGs, but in the case of this series, I feel it's not what I think I would focus on. At least in PotC I never really played much of the story, just played in the sandbox.

Maybe I might actually do that, since it's basically abandonware.
