FYI that wasn't a review AngryJoe did on Risen 3 (yet), just rants while streaming - a lot do that nowadays, even (other) professional reviewers. However, Sterling/Escapist did a proper review and slammed it with some fairly solid reasoning from what I remember (while noting that it could still be still fun in some situations). Some of the other reviews are just downright silly, on both ends of the spectrum.
Finished Taranis, the 2nd island that I'm on. Combat is getting trivial at the start even on hard. Doesn't help that your companion is a near invincible tank that hits like a truck. I want to play without companions to add to the challenge but I don't want to miss out on any dialogue. Read that the monsters I've seen so far are pretty much it for the rest of the islands. Supposedly one of the hardest enemies died in a few moments after my companion and me kept smashing at him. Also doesn't help when I can get a powerful sword (30-80, +10 slashing) for just 200g at the 2nd island I'm at.

Balancing, major asset reuse and the Piranha trademark senseless story... it REALLY sounds like a dud.
You need to dismiss your companion to get any sense of challenge for the combat, then you'll get the urge to level up, pump stats and get better loot like a normal RPG otherwise the companion just makes it bland.
Playing on it further it feels more Risen 2 than Risen 1. An improvement but still... The 3 factions will probably warrant a replay.
