What do others know about Rift. I just got in the beta and have played for about 60 minutes. Not sure about it yet, as it is just starting out.

I am not so much a pay to play person, but no price point has been set yet (not that I know of anyway).

Any others here that have been in the beta longer that can offer more insight?

Thanks
Typical Everquest/WoW model where you collect 10 raptor horns and if you're there for good gameplay, rather than to get addicted to looting and leveling, you will be bored in 5 minutes.

That was my opinion after an hour or so with the beta anyway. Maybe it gets amazing later, who knows.
I have heard the rift swarms are pretty fun, but it looked pretty generic to me at PAX. I would not invest in it heavily, personally, it's probably not worth it. At least it has the decency to sport good graphics, though.
MMO= Not interested.
Actually, the price point was what ultimately turned me away.

Really? That's founder's pricing? For a middle of the road MMO? I shudder to see what their standard regular pricing is..

Isn't that pretty much the same as WOW? Except they charge 10 bucks less for the expac box. Sometimes I will play MMOs in beta just to have some fun as then I get away with no sub. I'll never pay for a box+sub again.

I actually have beta keys for this, I just don't find it terribly compelling.

Well, they claim on that page that that price is founder's pricing. Which implies regular pricing is higher. ><

I enjoy MMOs.. don't think this one is for me though. And yeah. They're giving away beta keys.. they're still available now at the Zam website.

Funny I did not even need a key. I wrote and asked to try the beta and was given a link to the download; no key whatsoever.

$10.00 a month might not be too bad, but it would be better to see it about $8.50 a month.
I've heard that the combat is traditional stand-there-and-press-1-2-3 style, which has really worn on me over the years. It's also getting more difficult for me to accept monthly subscription fees, since f2p alternatives continue to improve. So, I probably won't be trying this one.
All I know about Rift is that it's yet another game Valve won't sell to me, while D2D claim they will (can't really trust their worldwide availability tags these days though). But as I'm not really in the mood for getting into another pay to play online game, I'll pass.

I have played beta for ~5 hours. The main differences between other this type of mmorpgs are rifts and class system.

Rifts opens all the time around the zone and spawn mobs that players have to kill. If they aren't killed in time they start invading local areas until there are couple of safe spots left. You get rewards for killing mobs and closing rifts. It sounds fun at first but in reality it gets boring and repeatitive just like questing really fast. Maybe it's better at higher levels.

There are 4 classes(callings) and ~9 skill trees/subclasses(souls) for each class with 16-19 abilities in one subclass. You can combine any 3 subclasses and have 4 different builds that you can switch between. You can relearn them at any time. It kind of reminds me of guild wars.

And that's about it. If you hate mmorpgs, then Rift is definitely not the game that will change your mind. Overall from gameplay, developers policy, pr stuff and even logo you can tell that Rift was made with one thought in mind - making money.
I literally can't even try the game out for long because I think it looks so ugly. Brown, brown, brown and the design is right out of a generic design 101 book.

Maybe it gets better later, but since I only play MMOs to explore the world basically the fact it looks ugly turns me off in seconds.
I'm in the beta, and played at PAX. It's ok, very generic, and is ill to the MMO syndrome. I can't wait for Guild Wars 2, SWTOR and the other promising changes to the MMO industry.
