Because dropping horizontally isn't heroic enough!

Vertical Drop Heroes HD, a fun procedurally-generated platformer slash RPG slash slasher with all the best heroic-fantasy tropes you love and some exclusive GOG-related content, is available 10% off for Windows and Mac OS X on GOG.com. That's only $4.49 for the first week.

Have you ever tried swinging a sword? The thing tends to be heavy as hell and not as easy to operate as you would imagine looking at all those fantasy movie heroes. Delivering a successful strike can prove to be a real challenge--even if your opponent is only a straw training dummy. Now, try hitting a real opponent. A real opponent that will probably hit back. One that will mostly try to hit you first. Or bite you, with his jaw full of rotting, poisonous, yellow fangs while you stare into his empty red beady eyes. Try doing that wearing a heavy plate armor. In the dark… while jumping platforms. Nah, you're better off doing that exclusively in a computer game, just like this one.

Vertical Drop Heroes HD delivers fun and rewarding action gameplay with RPG elements as it puts you through procedurally-generated worlds full of platforms to jump, treasure to loot, traps to avoid, and monsters to kill. Slash, bash, and dash your way to victory, wealth, and experience points that will allow for further development of your character's skills and stats. The GOG.com HD edition of the game comes complete with some exclusive content that will aid you along the way: a special GOG-shrine that bestows a damage bonus upon your character, and an original armor set. There's also one additional pesky mini-boss, but we'll leave it up to you to discover that menace. With great replayability value, lots of humor and challenge, and an optional multi-player (Windows-only at the time), this exceptional little gem crafted by a single passionate indie dev, Nerdook, is something we feel you'll enjoy immensely.

Set out on your many, many random fantasy quests in Vertical Drop Heroes HD, for only $4.49 on GOG.com. The 10% release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, May 27, at 9:59AM GMT.

EXTRA:
There's an interview with Nerdook, the game's creator, on the GOG.com Official Blog!

catpower1980: At first when I saw the homepage, I tought "just another platformer...." but at a second glance, it just checks everything in the "good fun" department:

- Intuitive controls and gameplay : jump + attack + 2 special moves and that's it, no needs for a tutorial (the "well-tought" litlle detail is that the specific buttons for the special moves are directly shown on screen while playing)

-X360 controls : playing this kind of game on the couch in front of the tv is always a bonus

-2 player local co-op with split-screen: because old school gaming rules and having fun with people on the same couch is always better than online experience.

-A small pinch of strategy : you can go down straight to the boss or you can choose other routes to collect bonuses/coins/allies/XP

-Budget computer friendly : small file size and while running, it doesn't make your processor burn

-Good price point: lower than your regular meal at the local fast-food (in western Europe ^o^)

It doesn't surprise me that the game was made by one guy because it's really developped with only the fun of the player in mind (maybe GOG should start rethinking about releasing Bleed and Super Panda Adventures here)
There's another hidden mechanic here but you have to beat the game first :)
Looks like my cup of tea.
Wishlisted for now. If it's as addictive as Rogue Legacy then it should be a good purchase. But today's other release (The Last Door) is the one I'm really interested in. :)

JudasIscariot: I played all ten levels on top of a few hours in NG+, feel free to ask me any questions about the game :)
Thanks, onto the One-Day Games list it goes!
Nerdook has a long history of quirky, creative Flash games. They aren't all perfect or for everyone, but they're always worth a close look. If you're not familiar with previous Nerdook games, chances are you haven't played anything quite like them.

Well, it took me more than a day to win, although I will admit it gets a bit easier once you unlock a few traits and some of the more esoteric abilities/spells...which is why there is NG+ :D

Ah, I see. So perhaps it's not a one-day game then? More like Rogue Legacy or Risk Of Rain, where subsequent plays are boosted by your earlier efforts?

Errrrmmmm more like Risk of Rain but you don't get drops of stuff, you buy your abilities and unlocks, and you re-roll characters until you get a pair of abilities that you like. You'll have to be careful as re-rolls cost gold :)

Also, it took me more than a day because I alternated between Ascendant and Vertical Drop Heroes :D

On average, the normal/story mode should take you 5-8 hours or so (more or less, depending on your skill with platform games, obviously!), which unlocks New Game Plus. New Game Plus is much more challenging, and it might take many more hours before you start posting decent scores.
Thanks for the info, I'll withdraw it from the one-day games list, since it seems it really should take longer to play properly.

Rodor: I personally slightly dislike the actual GOG trend to "PSEUDO - old good games" like ugly pixelated quasi-retro adventures, unending stream of platformers and such...

We have Desura for it, do we?

What about to look into the "Requested games" section from time to time?
Agree 100%
This game does look interesting, but how is it different from the Vertical Drop Heroes flash game?
high rated
Think of the flash game as a VERY early prototype for this game. The main thing that carries forward is the concept of "the game is a vertical platformer RPG!"... everything else, from the structure of the game, to the skills, enemies and levels, is improved and expanded, and instead of opening cages and turning into heroes you rescue, you now pick from one of three randomly generated heroes, and rescuing heroes from cages adds them as helpful NPC sidekicks to the current level.

One big addition is local network multiplayer, as well as a new engine (it's no longer made in Flash!).

Sounds cool! I put it on my wishlist!
This is going on the wishlist! It looks interesting enough and it's at a fair price point. I'd even get it day one if I weren't still recovering from the insomnia sale.
"Exclusive GOG content" ensures that I will never touch this thing. Hate store-exclusive shit, disappointed that GOG's decided to go all Gamestop on us.
