Ever wanted to become a hacker?

Uplink, probably the best game in the hack’n’crack genre, is available 50% off on GOG.com for $2.99 until next Thursday!

Uplink: Hacker Eliteset up the path for other Introversion titles--games that lack in high-end graphics (which, on the other hand, is a good thing for many of us old-laptop users), but flourish in the gameplay department. This also makes them difficult to advertise to a more action-oriented audience: “Hey, do you want to play an RTS about flat ‘somethings’ living in the computer?” or “No, it’s not a screensaver, I’ve just launched 28 nuclear missiles.” But anyone looking for a good time in front of his/her PC will not be disappointed.

Uplink: Hacker Elite is a hacker (surprise!) simulation set in a cyberpunk future world, which takes a lot from classic hacker movies like Sneakers and Hackers. The game, surprisingly, offers a really interesting story, with many side-quests and a believable world. You start as an aspiring freelance hacker and slowly build up your position in the hacking underground, earn some cash, upgrade your computer, and get comfortable with the interface so you can take on more ‘intriguing’ assignments. Missions include stealing research data, sabotaging other companies, crashing the stock market, erasing evidence, and, of course, not getting caught by the FBI.

Uplink is a non-standard game, but the hacker’s OS is accessible and enjoyable right from the get-go. Grab it for only $2.99.

Visit the Summer Indie Drop promo page to get DEFCON, Uplink, Gemini Rue, and Multiwinia for 50% off until Thursday, July 19 at 06:59 PM EDT.
Bought this and Deus EX the other day and have really got into this. A hacking simulation game is a great idea and it's quite well executed here.
This is an immersive hacker RPG. You feel like a movie hacker, bouncing connections, deleting logs, transferring money. The save system is perfect. It's all automatic so you can "log out" and come back later. If you screw up and get caught you lose your gateway PC and your user name.

If you don't like the idea of losing your user name you can always "hack" your game and save the files. Just in case. :)

Best game in the genre. The Hacker Evolution games are great but Uplink is the gold standard and has not been surpassed yet. What are you waiting for? Fire up your modem and get hacking!!!!
Neuromancer is even better, but I dunno if GOG can get the rights.
It's been ages since a game kept me playing for 8 hrs straight every day, for 3 days in a row!

One thing we can be sure of: if anybody can, it's GOG.

No, I didn't just say that, hoping that someone from the staff would read this and offer me some awesome gift. Although I can't say that I wouldn't highly appreciate it.

Can't say that it's been few games that have been capable of keeping me glued to the screen for several days in a row but yes, Uplink was among them. The eerie part is that I was still far away from beating it.

If you mean as a hacking simulation, then no, Neuromancer isn't better than Uplink. Not by a long shot. It's an excellent adventure game though. Provided we're thinking of the same Neuromancer, of course.
I picked up on a whim and played all weekend, great atmosphere for such a simple premise.

I meant it's a better hacking "themed" game(imo).

When I found it during my early grog fueled days I got hooked.....I loved trying to "hack" various computers and accomplish things as I went through the physical & computer worlds. Also ORGAN SELLING.....fun times(well not for the protagonist, of course.)

The only one I know is the adventure game from 1988.

oh no just a remake with updated graphics.
no multiplayer afaik, just said the idea would have been nice.
Btw just if anyone is wondering: The game is updated to 1.6 despite the installer reading 1.00 for some reason.

@blue guys: maybe someone should fix this ^^.
