Watching beginnings of social decay, gloating or sneering at life's disarray.

Unrest - Special Edition, an fantastic RPG set in alternative ancient India, full of meaningful choices affecting the branching narrative, is available 10% off for Windows and Mac OS X, on GOG.com. That's $22.49 for the first week!

Set in a fantasy interpretation of ancient India, Unrest is an adventure RPG focused on story and choices. Play as five ordinary people who are struggling to get by in the in the famine-stricken city-state of Bhimra. Brave poverty, disease, treason, political and social upheaval. Face unique burdens and gripping dilemmas as you struggle to survive in each chapter...but choices made to help one character may well make life harder for another. In Unrest, there are no heroes of legend, there is no mystical quest, and fate has not chosen you. You're on your own.

Unrest - Special Edition lets you take on the role of a peasant girl faced with an arranged marriage, a priest troubled by his radical temple, a slum dweller with a dangerous past, an ambassador from a militant nation, and a mercenary captain far out of his depth - all as part of the same narrative. Hard decisions made in one chapter have consequences in the next. A choice made as one character may well determine the fate of another. There are no fail states in Unrest - if a character dies or fails in their objectives, that becomes part of the tale. Organic, branching dialogues designed to offer an unparalleled level of control and involvement to the player. The Special Edition offered here comes with The Unrest OST, a 12-track instrumental album inspired by Indian classical music, a novella set in Bhimra, high-res digital posters, including a concept map of Bhimra, behind the scenes developer footage as well as some concept art & design documents.

If you're looking for an RPG experience that actually focuses on playing a role, make sure to check out Unrest - Special Edition for $22.49. Alternatively, you can get the basic version for $13.49, and if you like, you can always upgrade it later. The 10% off special release discount on all things Unrest lasts until Wednesday, July 30, at 3:59PM GMT.

Crosmando: Does this game have stats? I don't see any stats in the screenshots.
There are "relation with other characters" values that are depicted graphically (not numerically) as horizontal bars at the top of the dialog window. (See my post above for what they mean.) My guess at this point would be that there are no combat stats in the game (except maybe internal/hidden ones for each playable character - not likely something you can affect).

Crosmando: Also no combat?
Apparently combat is like a rare mythical beast in this game: <i>"Combat exists, according to developer Pyrodactyl Games, though in two playthroughs of the game I haven't found even one battle."</i>
any chance of more screen shots and mini review? ( not sure.how why I missed the kick starter ugh)
Is there a reason why GOG "won't be issuing keys to Kickstarter backers" ? That's very disappointing, i have my whole collection on GOG and would prefer to get my kickstarted game here of course (instead of the provided steam/humble bundle). I also kickstarted Divinity:Original Sin, and got my key for that game without problems...

IanM: Thanks, makes sense now.

Has anyone played enough Unrest yet to share some thoughts? in theory it sounds like it should appeal to me, the themes and setting are outside of the typical, yet the sales pitch really puts me off - some of the blurb makes it seem like a crude, politically correct lecture...

JudasIscariot: I am waiting on the Linux version myself so I have no impressions to share just yet :)
Yes, what happened to the Linux versions which were promised to come to GOG a long time ago ... when I was young? :)

IAmSinistar: That is correct. Sorry for the confusing pronoun usage. I'll be trying Witcher 2 soon, hopefully. I've only been holding off on them this long because I feared they would monopolise my free time (as indeed the first one has).
It will :) Though you might not like the combat... Also I'm a bit annoyed because I've just reached chapter 3 and when I'm done I'm contemplating to re-play a large chunk because of the choices I made :P
Hmm the Idea seems an interesting premise, but I'm really not interested in India.

so it looks like the difference in price really boils down to the soundtrack?

Well it's like a digital collectors edition that the majors use all the time.
Meh move imo by the devs.

It's more of a role playing game than a roll playing game :)

Well who would want to play as bread anyways :P

don't forget the novella ;)

I don't get why these things (soundtracks, designs, concept art, etc) are so expensive, it's not as if it's content that has been created specifically for DLC or collector's editions. It's more like: here's some crap we had leftover from the project because we couldn't come up with anything better. A novella isn't exactly high value content either.

How are soundtracks selling for $10-$15 anyway? if it's just music lifted out of the game it's not an extra?! Even if it's an exclusive album of songs not in the game, it's videogame music, not the latest album from a pop star!

Careful or someone might make a Bread Simulator 2014 :P

IAmSinistar: Delighted to see a game that deals with such complex topics here. The continuing maturity of the artform, I hope.

The artstyle is interesting as well.
Just my thoughts too. There is hope for better games after all. We need to support them whenever they come by.

Check on bandcamp. Average OST sells for between 5- 10 bucks. Be glad it isnt higher. Having said that, check out the Dreamfalls kickstarter - the only tier including soundtrack is 50 bucks....with base game being worth 30 bucks...

Does it beat the Tree or Be a Mechanic simulator? (cant remember exact title), or even the pet rock one? :P

That's usually up to developers - that's why I back usually only those games that say that there will be DRM-free digital edition on GOG.
