It's a human ant colony!

The Settlers 4: Gold Edition, a charming civilization-building strategy classic true to its roots and full of micro-managing goodness, is available on GOG.com for only $9.99.

Looking at an anthill one can't help to admire the excellent workflow managment the little insects so effortlessly achieve. Something that's entirely out of reach for any human corporation, community, nor army comes absolutely natural to them. Every ant seems to know its exact place in the big scheme and in any given moment it does exactly what it's supposed to be doing. Now imagine, that it's not an anthill you're looking at, but a human settlement, and it's not the insect hive mind in control but you. Kind of makes you drunk with power, right? Well snap out of it, cause the ominous Dark Tribe is coming to obliterate everything that's good in your realm and it's up to you to lead the Romans, Mayans, Vikings, and Trojans in the struggle against the invader.

The Settlers 4: Gold Edition is everything you would expect from a Settlers game and more! The brilliant mechanics of managing and expanding your settlements by the hands of little virtual villagers are still there, as enjoyable as ever. This time, however, the game comes with a number of useful tweaks such as a seamless zoom feature giving you better overview of your realm. This installment offers higher resolution support so that game can be more detailed than ever. The Gold Edition comes with two expansions: The Trojans and the Elixir of Power, adding another playable nation and its campaign, and a Mission CD with a great selection of scenarios and a random map generator. With this edition, there can be no end to your fun with your tiny obedient subjects.

If you like the Settlers series you simply can't miss this title. If you're not familiar with it, The Settlers 4: Gold Edition is a perfect entry point to the Settlers universe, available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

oldschool: I still have the original on 3,5" diskettes. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the original game entitled "Serf city: Life is feudal?" I believe it was originally published by the long dead SSI. <sniff>
"The Settlers" was the name used in EU, it was called "Serf City" in the US (like Ufo: Enemy Unknown and X-Com Ufo Defense).
I never played these games, but I'd always sort of imagined that Settlers was some sort of Civilization/Age of Empires-esque real-world thing. I was not expecting "Morbus has been banished to Earth by HIM, the highest god of all." So congratulations of making my day slightly more surreal.

I already own the boxed game, so I would only buy this if I knew that the LAN multiplayer had been fixed. Otherwise there is not much point.

ZivilSword: So I should ask the question to GOG.com: They did it again? They released a settler game without the original German language? *sigh* Nevermind, I was never a big fan of Settlers …
Yes they did it again. It is a nice move from GOG, this would be a instabuy, so i can safe my budget for the ongoing Steam Summer Sale...

There is no sublicense or other legal stuff in Germany, this game is from Blue-Byte, a company owned by Ubisoft. They just have to deal with them...
It worked in the past and german language was added to the Gothic Series and to The Book of Unwritten Tales. Maybe GOG wants my money in the future...

Just saw it. What a pity. I think I might have the original CD still which then would be superior to the GOG version. I would need to keep it...
Yes, Book of Unwritten Tales with German language was cool, I bought it here. Gothic was in a sale for 5 Euro from Gamesload (all three parts, no DRM). I never meant buying it, but a friend recommended it. Maybe someday.^^

Settlers 3 in German would be nice here, or part 4. I would at least try one of them.

I didn't know this but looks like you are right. At the time it was released I think I still had my C-64 (which I so foolishly gave away to my cousin coz 'I just bought PC - I don't need this crap any more' So stupid of me..) . So if SSI was publisher no hope for Settlers 1 on gog.com?

Well we can always hope, I'm still hopeful that we eventually get the Dungeons and Dragons "Gold Box" games here. One thing that is positive is that Panzer General is on the site. <thumbs crossed>
So the downside to this build is that it's looking impossible to run it in a window or change screen resolution. Even the fixes for the "Gold edition" posted elsewhere don't work.

They won't always work... I've already tried with german and english disc versions. They won't work on my laptop, but will on my tower. Odd.
So has anyone played this via LAN and can tell me if it still drops out or not during play?

My experience is that, if you keep saving the game like very 5 minutes, the game should stay synchronized.

But I had every possible case; from playing hours and hours without a problem to the game desynchronizing right after saving. But it works pretty much fine.

So in other words, I should keep my boxed version and not bother with this one. Thanks that is all I needed to know. A shame they could not fix it in this version :(

Yes, I too am hoping that GOG is able to work out a D&D deal and bring those back to life. Not for myself, but I know that it would make a lot of people happy, and I've love to see these classics resurrected.
