A power too great for mortals to harness, a quest too great to pass upon.

Summoner, a brilliant console-style RPG that starts small and unfolds into an amazingly complex and exciting experience that just keeps on giving, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.79 for the first week.

Summoners have toppled empires and challenged gods. They are venerated as saviours and feared as destroyers. With rings crafted by the ancient Khosani, the gifted can call forth demons, dragons, and elementals, but only the strongest can control the forces they unleash. Born with the mark of the Summoner, Joseph possesses a power greater than emperors and gods. As a child, he summoned a demon to save his village, and watched in horror as those he loved were destroyed. Nine years later, the armies of Orenia invade, and Joseph must confront the prophecy he was born to fulfill.

In Summoner, you traverse a beautiful, completely original world spanning two continents. You'll summon up to 16 different creatures, such as minotaurs, golems, dragons, and try to control them in combat. You'll be casting spectacular spells and wield an extensive arsenal of weapons and armor. With the large gameworld to explore, memorable NPCs to meet and befriend, an interesting combat system that adds some extra fun and strategy into battles, and--most importantly--a great story to tell, this 2000 classic game feels a lot like a great jRPGs, but comes in its own anime&grind-free flavor.

Fulfill the prophecy, reach for the ultimate power, and take a shot at vanquishing evil before you become a part of it in Summoner, for only $4.79 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, March 4, at 10:59AM GMT.

nadenitza: The legal gymnastics tho... getting the rights to a console game and selling it as a PC with the ps2 emulator... :)

overread: One of my dreams is that one day GOG will branch out into the console market in some form. Well emulated console games on PC would be utterly fantastic! Old Spryo and Medieval and Crash and more ^
Hear, hear! :)

ShadowWulfe: Who has the rights to Summoner 2/all Summoner franchise? My question is: would any of them be willing to port the PS2 version to the PC and sell it here?

JudasIscariot: Well, I know Nordic Games has the rights to the first game because umm well we released it here under their name but this could be just limited to distribution rights but, then again, I really have no idea :/
Sometimes I worry about the console market because there are so many old games that are literally getting buried, with used copies either in poor condition or very expensive and vintage, especially disc based systems where scratches can ruin a game disc if bad enough (throw a cartridge out the window and it might still work). It's just so hard to express how great some older console games were when it's hard to even get your hands on them.

I'm not talking about porting Nintendo games or Sony brand games like Mario or God of War (though they'd be cool), but more so games like Summoner 2, Vagrant Story, the other Grandias (2 got a PC port), the rest of the Final Fantasy's, and of course over 100 other games that I know I want on PC but I don't want to boggle your mind with an exhaustive list of rare gems that have gone missing these days.

And of course, most important of all...it should be done RIGHT :) . If it's going to turn into a buggy, slushy mess, don't do it until you get it right!

Though emulators have ported console games for years, I'd rather have it official.

We are having the Summoner 2 PS2 rights as well - we are currently looking forward to bring it on PSN. In terms of a PC port there is no information to share currently.

Finally finished it after getting the windowed mode to work. Great game.

I still vote for a PC port of Summoner 2.

It was removed along with most Nordic games when regional currencies were introduced...

It was removed from the GOG catalog on 1/2 September (depending on your time zone).

It was removed, you could get a DRM free copy at ShinyLoot though

It's DRM-free on Steam, as well. (so says the wiki)
