In space no one can hear you go "BRAAAINZZZZ!"

Space Pirates and Zombies (And Bounty Hunters!), a.k.a. SPAZ, a robust top-down space combat game with tactical depth and a new procedurally generated galaxy to explore with each playthrough, is available 75% off for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, on GOG.com. That's only $2.49 for the first three days!

Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more. Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor. As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet. Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.

Set out for the ultimate space crusade against the undead in Space Pirates and Zombies, for only $2.49 on GOG.com. The 75% off special release discount offer lasts until Sunday, July 27, at 9:59AM GMT.
I forgot about the ending date of the promo. :(

TheJadedOne: So far the bounty hunters just make the grinding that much worse -- grind for ore to pay them off, or grind in their arena to appease them. (I may try the "screw the hunters" route though, and just wait for them to try to collect on their bounty. That's if I decide to actually play any more of this game.)
Definitely go 'screw the hunters' route. They have their own class of ships you can only get when they are around (unless you kill zombie versions). Also minor spoiler, later on in the game they are the best source of goons to replenish your ever decreasing stock.

TheJadedOne: What does it have to do with your beacon? As far as I know, if you hold the 'w' key down long enough you can fly as far from the beacon as you want. You're saying it's a dead-man switch so if I keel over, at least my virtual ship won't fly away? :-P

From an in-game-world perspective, having the stabilizer be "always on" would be rather retarded, because you would be majorly capping your top speed as well as all of your accelerations.
Well if fuel was a consideration yeah that would probably make more sense. But since you can repair or retreat any time you want without the beacon, it's almost faster than trying to return to it first. Logically you want to be stabilized vs floating freely, especially when you aren't actively going anywhere.

I really don't know.... why can't we have threaded drives like in RingRunner? That made more sense and had a lot more comedy to it...
This is a really cool game! Glad to see it in GOG's catalog.
Oh s**t, this game promo ended before the weekend promo ending.. damn. -_-'
Well, I didn't know much about it anyway, maybe next time.

TheJadedOne: First off, it's got a major bug that shows up very early on. If you install it to:

C:\games\spaz

the game does not work right. You won't know this until you can't dock and wonder what you're doing wrong. (It's not you - it's the game.
I installed it to a custom location on K:, different HD, and named the game folder spaz. I had no issues with docking or the tutorial.
Surprisingly addictive and fun. Explosions are fun to look at and hear, getting new ships and customizing them is great. Love the fleet system and being able to swap through them on the fly, beats having only 1 ship like so many other space games.

They shot themselves in the foot with the title. Initially I thought it was some cliche zombie game set in space with possible tower defense and didn't bother to get it. Great to see I'm wrong and on GOG to boot.

Khadgar42: This game is awesome!
I bought it from humble bubble eons ago, but I keep wondering:

Why aren't there more games like this?

And where is Ambrosia's catalogue of Escape Velocity, Nova and Override?
I want MOAR!!!
Well, there is:
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-STAR/starscape
It is DRMfree. If you don't mind my pathetic English, read my mini review on Gamersgate. Sometimes it is 75% off, generally at the same time Steam offers it for cheap.
So on a scale of French Croissant to 10, how similar is this mechanically, gameplay wise and et al to Operation Inner Space?
I can agree that the title is terribly horrible and - apparently - misleading.
But, anyone can tell how this compares to Ring Runner Flight of the Sages?

It's not as complex as Spaz becomes near the end, but the flying, fighting, upgrading and grinding (i.e. addicting) part is equally good.
Mechanically it's near perfect. (great gamepad controls)
Like I wrote, I gave the French Croissant rating of 4/5 which is a 4,99/5. Thus I'd say 9/10, and I don't give 9s very often...

edit: Sorry, misread your post: I thought you had asked about my post, so I compared Starscape to spaz.
'Inner Space', I don't even know.

Oh, you know, just that incredibly old cult game about collecting icons.
Wow, I just realised SPAZ 2 is coming out end of this year. It's on the steam page, is it coming to GOG as well? Day 1 buy for sure, grown to love SPAZ.
