Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

Wurzelkraft: THANK YOU! I got lucky and took it.

Trilarion: You're welcome. Was worried after the initial sale everyone would have it.
Not to mention it was in the recent Deep Silver Humble Bundle!
Does anyone know how GOG calculates the top seller ranking?

Is it sold units or total return?
What is the time frame?

Because Risen was in the Top Sellers all genres list for the last days but went off it quite quickly while the AoW 3 Deluxe Edition holds number 1 for quite some time ( a week a least). What happened in the last two days was the Square Enix weekend sale with Thief and Deus Ex which consequently are quite high in the top sellers list.

So who is buying AoW3 Deluxe edition like crazy?

The most probable explanation is that not sold units but total return for a very short time frame (1-3 days) is shown.

I guess the top seller ranking on the front page is about total return. When you look at the complete list of games both versions of Age of Wonders 3 are much lower than Risen while they were on top on the main page the whole time.

Good question, that. Weren't they saying a while back that it was all sorts of broken anyway? If so, depends how it was "fixed" too.
Would be interesting to see an actual list of copies sold, alongside the time the game was in the catalog (or maybe directly an average per week or month). Possibly approximate if they don't want to get more specific, to the nearest hundred (and just "<100" if that's the case), maybe to the nearest 500 or 1000 for large numbers.

Tarhiel: Well, have you played Gothic?
No, as I mentioned I haven’t played any games made by Piranha Bytes.

Leroux: I think the games by Piranha Byte are more about exploration and world lore than about strong plots, even though I have only completed Gothic 1 and played a bit of Gothic 2 and Risen. If you want a more linear and story-oriented RPG that pushes you forward and constantly suprises you with story twists, this might not be it, but that's not to say that the games' storytelling is bad, world and characters are actually pretty good and more believable than in the average RPG. If you can spare a few dollars, I'd suggest you try it for yourself.
Thanks for your helpful answer Leroux (+1 rep.).
I didn’t buy the game and probably never will. I found this review very helpful - especially the following passage:

Speaking of characters, the town and the monastery are pleasant enough, but they lack the vibrancy and NPC character development that gives other games such pizazz. The population is diverse, and the conversations are original and entertaining, but essentially there is nothing to keep you interested in them. Even your main character is aloof with no past - a blank slate. There is nothing here to get you emotionally involved.

Furthermore, it seems that at some point a lot of people have lost interest in finishing the game. Regarding their different reasons for quitting I thoroughly enjoyed reading matneee’s fascinating account of his/her deeply personal quest for a pair of shoes (called What makes an open world game open? - posted on 2014-04-04).

PS: Sorry about the late reply guys. :)

PPS: Is it somehow possible to link directly to a GOG review?

This one got quite a few negative reviews, but I keep returning to it for some reason. I like the fact that character progression is slow, loot is hard to come by (and therefore more satisfying when acquired) and there are two or three different story-paths to take. I joined the woodland gang the first time I played, and had one of those epic emergent gameplay moments when I lured a monster into camp to bypass an annoying story path and kill my most hated rival in the group. I may never finish the damn game, but it's unlikely I'll give up anytime soon. Beautiful soundtrack and atmosphere too, especially the seaside town. If you like playing an ass-kicking machine ala Skyrim or Dishonored, this game is NOT for you, however.
Basically if you like games that spoon feed you throughout, you wont like this game.
On the other hand, if you don't care much for spoon feeding and actually want a little bit of a challenge in your games, you'll love this.

djgizmoe: This one got quite a few negative reviews
I think that mostly happened to the Xbox 360 version (due to bugs, bad performance, control issues, and poor graphics compared to the PC version) - the PC version was generally well-received.

Updated with soundtrack in FLAC - AAAAWESOOOOOME!!! Thanks GOG!
Why is Risen1 now again on top of the Top Sellers list, although it is not on sale anymore and wasn't anywhere in the list for the last days?

Are they just generating random draws from their catalogue or is it the average of the last 20 sales?

edit: Funny enough, after a reload of the webpage, the first place was replaced by Risen 2...
