Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion

Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut, a sensational indie first person-perspective puzzler, that now comes with a brand new backstory allowing you to experience the game in much deeper perspective, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the first three days!

Set in a mysterious and abstract sterile environment, Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) is a first-person puzzle game that challenges you to navigate each level by manipulating colored cubes that surround you. There's little to go on as the game begins - you are dropped into an all-white room with few instructions, and simply have to figure your way out. Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut is the definitive version you want to play, and this time the mind bending gameplay will be accompanied by a completely new story by award-winning writer Rob Yescombe. This edition also features a new 10-level time-trial mode, a new original music score, and - if you dare - Occulus Rift support. The game comes complete with the Race Against the Qlock DLC.

So, how quick is your understanding of block extrusion, these days? Find out in Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut, for only $3.99 on GOG.com (or, if you prefer, the equivalent in EUR, AUD, GBP, or RUB). The special 60% off release discount offer lasts only until Sunday, August 31, at 10:59AM GMT, so don't miss out!

IronArcturus: Does Q.U.B.E. have an FOV slider in the options?
Nope, which sucks. I like the game, but I get nauseated playing it. Assuming that it is an FOV issue, I have to play in short bursts.

Niggles: i buy moslty GOG games mr smartass :P

Blooglspash: Isn't the phrase "GOG Games" redundant (like "ATM Machine")?
Grey on grey games?
Ass-to-mouth machine?

From what I've read, it looks like there is a manual way to set FOV, but you have to edit a text file to do it:

Found that info earlier. For some reason it didn't work for me, but thanks anyway. Oddly enough, this is the only game that gives me "motion" sickness.

Did you try the "Director's Cut" version of QUBE? That's the same version as GOG.

Yeah I did, but I just tried it again, and for some reason it now works. Something must have pasted wrong the first time. Much better :D

Great! QUBE is a really fun game. I'm glad GOG finally got it!

Been having a blast with it (aside from the problem I was having)!
Does this game utilize a network connection?

That isn't noted on the game card, but Windows Firewall came up the first time I ran it. There's also "network stuff" in the log files the game generates.

the game looks cool; i like the fact that there's a story going on this time.

No, it doesn't utilize a network connection. Making the firewall pop up like that is a weird quirk of Unreal Engine games such as Q.U.B.E. :)

Actually, my firewall was also tripped too by the game. I think QUBE does some kind of "online leader board." I wish that was disabled by default.

Yes, it does but I don't think our version has that. As for the general tripping up the firewall part, I believe that would be up to the makers of the Unreal Engine to do so as we have no control over that aspect of the engine :)

But my version is the GOG version. The only reason why it would need to go online is for the built-in leaderboards in the game. I don't understand why devs need to add things like that.

Good to know!

I am still perplexed about it though - due to other things I see.

For example, there is an "Engine" directory, with these three subfolders:
Shaders
Config
Localization

And there is also a QUBEGame folder, with these subfolders:
Cloud
Config
CookedPC
Localization
Logs
Script
Splash

"an engine quirk" would look more plausible if 'Cloud" was under the "Engine" folder instead of the "QUBEGame" folder. Just looks suspicious.

The game generates log files under "QUBEGame/Logs".

In those logs are entires such as:

Init: WinSock: version 1.1 (2.2), MaxSocks=32767, MaxUdp=65467
[0000.50] Log: Steam Client API initialized 0
[0001.58] Log: Steam Game Server API initialized 0
[0001.62] DevDataBase: Connection to "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=production-db;Initial Catalog=EngineTaskPerf;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Connection Timeout=2" or "10.1.20.20" failed
[0006.80] Log: Steam Client API is unavailable
[0707.21] DevDataBase: Spent 0.000016 seconds communicating with "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=production-db;Initial Catalog=EngineTaskPerf;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Connection Timeout=2" or "10.1.20.20"

That last line looks suspicious. Seems to be indicating the game spent time "communicating" with an SQL server via IP (0.000016 seconds - yes very short - but things happen fast on computers!)

Overall these may be vestiges of some Steam stuff turned off or other "weird engine quirks"; but I'm not sure I trust this game to not inadvertantly be "networking" who knows what that got "overlooked" when turning off the network stuff - or perhaps the weird engine quirkiness is inadvertantly "leaky".

Not sure I'll play this title until I get some solid info about this stuff.

[EDIT]: Oops I forgot that I had set Windows Firewall to Block this game. A more pertinent question is - what would the log file entries look like if QUBE was not blocked? I'm not willing to unblock it to find out...
