amok: The DRM free games on Steam can be installed and played without the Steam client. You can backup those games, and they still work if Steam shuts down.

Steam in itself is not DRM.
At one point, once you have bought a game via Steam, you HAVE to use the client. It's needed to verify that you got a license for the game you want to use, even if you don't intend to use it ever again for that particular game. So your argument is flat out false.

Saying Steam is not a measure of DRM shows that the concept of DRM seems to elude you.

Smannesman: Why exactly?
It's the same game for roughly the same price and the Steam version has cloud saving, Steam Workshop and 60 achievements.

Zoidberg: Lol, sorry your answer made me smile. My post could technicaly have been talking of Gabe Newell! XP

Yes, I was speaking of regionally priced Gabriel Knight.

Sorry for the confusion again.
No worries, I just thought that was your pet name for Gabe :P
I agree that regional pricing sucks and I also feel that the 'fair pricing' is not fair at all.
So it's very nice that the developers of LOG2 didn't go that way.

And again you are wrong... the DRM free games do not need to be verified. You can download the game, move it out of the folder, delete steam and the start them up for the first time without any verification... It is what makes them drm free... the game that need to be verified are the CEG enabled games.

amok: you know, your obsession with steam is seriously dangerous. You really need to see someone about it.

Enebias: amok, please... I don't want to start an argument or seem offensive, but *you* are the one that keeps on talking about other stores in an obsessive manner (Steam in particular, and you *know* how that service is percieved here) on every single thread. Does it really surprise you when people come out with this kind of jokes? (That does not make them nice though, of course.)
I don't know if you noticed, but we are on GOG here, on the official forum of said commercial activity. Keeping on ranting about how other stores are better (in your opinion) is certainly not going to endear you the users.
Before you reply: I'm not saying this as a GOG zealot, I would state the same if I saw someone praising GOG on Steam or any other place... *if* they could do it before being silenced by moderators, of course.
Please, stop complaining about the fact that lately many threads often turn in the ususal GOG vs Steam debate, because you are usually only feeding the fire.
I will stop talking about Steam here, when people also stop saying false and rubbish things... It is not a matter of which store is "better" than any others (they all have pros and cons and non is better or worse...) it is a matter of propaganda and misinformation (2 things I really do not like no matter which shape).

So you contradict yourself and prove my point: You HAVE to use Steam, no matter what, unlike here where you are free to use the GOG downloader or don't. Case closed, at least for me in this discussion.
I suppose I should play the first one as I got it from a bundle a long time ago but never actually tried it.

sigh... and I HAVE to use a browser to download gOg games... not only that - I actually HAVE to log into my gOg account also, the horror. If I buy a game on disk, i HAVE to carry the disk home to install the game.

I have never seen any definition of DRM where the delivery mode was considered as part of it - only your control and access over the software when you have it.

It is fine to dislike Steam, but do so for what it is and do not invent reasons which is not there. It can be purely emotional reasons, that's fine, but at least be honest about it.

You really should give it a go! If you are a fan of old school dungeon crawlers you will be in heaven :)

Nice! Glad to see LoG2 released here too! I still have barely played the first one though, so this one goes to the wishlist for now.

I got it in a bundle as well, and did not play it for a long time. But then one day I did... and I can say it was really worth playing. so yes I would play the first one before playing this one, and don't rush it, just enjoy it.

Cavalary: Can you download and install it without using any third party software?
avatar
amok: no, but neither can I download gOg games without third party software.... (browser, for example, or the gog downloader).
Your argument is based on a fallacy right here, by equaling the steam client with all browsers. GOG doesn't restrict you to a specific or a subset of browsers. If I don't trust any of Firefox, IE, chrome AND the gog downloader it's not a problem: I can just run Opera. In fact, if you were to show up at gog 's HQ with a pen drive I wouldn't put past them to copy the installer for you after you log into your account in front of them and show the intended game on your shelf.

Tell me: if you want to download a game from your steam library and for some reason the steam client is not an option what would you do?

Also, with GOG the path until I start playing my games can have the minimum amount of obligatory software installed. Even if I don't need it to run my game the Steam client is required. That only makes those games less drm-restricted than their other games, not drm-free.

avatar
amok: And yes, I can install the DRM free games from Steam without 3d party software.... in fact they have one less dependency than the gOg ones, as they are not inside an installer wrapper....
Gog's installer is as good as nonexistent as soon as the installation is complete. Steam is either going to stay there or at very least you have to uninstall it yourself.
Great release!
Started playing last night, and it's as good as I hoped. Actually it's quite an ambitious follow-up. The open outdoors are stunning, and I think I've found more loot on the first level then I did in the whole first game. :)

The gameplay is much like the original, so if you love the first Grimrock, this should be an easy choice.

Only downside so far is that saves are pretty slow, and loads even slower. But I expect they may patch in improvements on that down the line.

So far, so fab!
Looks great, I just miss the main trailer theme from the original a bit. :-)
Wishlisted for now, I, too, need to recover from recent sales...
Maybe when the Linux version will be out ;)
