Hipster Dave starred in Romero's platformers before they were keen.

Dangerous Dave Pack, which includes three classic platformers: Haunted Mansion, Risky Rescue, and Dave Goes Nutz, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Among the gaming industry legends, John Romero is one of the most colorful and recognizable people. But how well do you know the early works of the man that pitted you against Hitler in Wolfenstein 3D, sent you on a one way trip to demon-infested space station in Doom, and armed you in nine-inch-nail-gun to blast atrocious Shamblers in Quake? Here's your chance to get acquainted with three games from Romero's pre-id Software times. What kind of games? Platformers, of course!

Dangerous Dave Pack features a sizable chunk of platforming history. Dave, a character created by John Romero, runs and guns through three mind-twisting adventures. In Haunted Mansion our hero searches for his brother Delbert, who was trapped in a house filled with ghosts, ghoul, and zombies, that need to be put down back in the ground with Dave's trusty shotgun. In Risky Rescue Delbert is missing again and Dave has to face the evil, skull-faced Doctor Nemesis to get him back. He succeeds, of course, but there's no rest for the wicked--in Dave Goes Nutz our hero has to break free from a mental institution that's crawling with zombies. For the price of one game you get three sets of devious levels full of monsters to blast, traps to be avoided, and shiny diamonds to collect!

Are you up to some classic platforming action? Do you dare to stare into the pixelated abyss of PC EGA-era gaming history? Well then, grab Dangerous Dave Pack for only $5.99.

Fuzzyfireball: Hey, if we started seeing id games I'd be equally excited! They definitely deserve their spot here.

adambiser: Same here, but I have a feeling they were only mentioned to increase appeal for the Dangerous Dave games who might not know them, but know Romero's later games.

Would love to see them though even though I have most of IDs releases on CD already. Now if Raven Software could somehow make it, too, but that's a side note...
So the Romero here must be John Romero right? Whats with daves games (unless you mean dangerous dave) I kept thinking, who the hell is dave romero, lol.

And the dangerous dave games are by flatrock software. Did they buy the rights off id or something?

You rule man. Thanks for contacting Flat Rock the other time.

id never owned the rights Softdisk did those were made before John Romero and Carmack(along with a few others at Softdisk) left to form id.

I see, thanks for explaining. Anachronox is another of Romero's games here. Damn good too.

I did say "Dangerous Dave games", but yes, John Romero.

Flatrock got the rights from Softdisk, not ID.

Thing about Raven's games is they're all divided among publishers.

ShadowCaster is owned by EA, Cyclones and Necrodome is owned by Ubisoft, Mageslayer might be Atari, I'm not sure about Take No Prisoners.

Then you got Heretic, Hexen, Deathkings and Hexen 2 all owned by id Software. Heretic 2 and oddly enough Hexen 2's expansion is owned by Activision, along with SoF and SoF 2.

Of course I could be wrong with those early titles, but if I'm not GOG should easily be able to get some of them.

Not sure if my email is what triggered everything, but thanks! I'm glad to see them here. :)

Take a look at Softdisk's Wikipedia entry. It's interesting, if a bit short.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softdisk

If I'm not mistaken, they also helped distribute some of Apogee's and id's later games too, in those cheaper plastic wrap packages, but they didn't have the rights to manage the IP themselves.

Fuzzyfireball:
Yeah, I know they've kind of done things around the board a bit, but one can hope!

cpc464: Maybe one day we will see all of Apogee's platformers too
This, assuming there are no rights issues i'm interested in trying the very first two Duke Nukem games as well as the Epic Megagames platformers and other PC platformers too.

In the meantime, you can still buy and download lots of Apogee's games from the 3DR store. They also released a lot of games as freeware.

Oh nice, I might have to try some of those out if I can finish up Thief Gold or pull myself away from it for five seconds. I see they even have the Duke Nukem: Time to Kill commercials for download, crazy. Thanks!
avatar
KhalidYousif: Does that mean more stuff made by id Software will be released in near/far future? :)
avatar
Fuzzyfireball: This is Flat Rock Studios, GOG still needs Zenimax for id games.
Wait, according to Wikipedia, Zenimax also owns Arcane Studios, so if Arx Fatalis is here, what's keeping back the id/Bethesda stuff???
I forgot they still sold their games on their site. I remember thinking it was odd though since I'm sure selling the rest of their games as in other then DN3d and rott would get many more sold.

Hmm quite a few more of them are freeware then before I'll have to look their next time I want to play some platformer goodness.
