Suck it Down!

Daikatana, a legendary first-person perspective shooter by the one and only John Romero, famous for its borderline-insane difficulty level and featuring many fresh ideas, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

"Suck it Down!". No, we did not invent that tagline. This was one of the original slogans this game used when it first launched in the year 2000. It wasn't even the one that sprouted controversy--that would be "John Romero's about to make you his bitch", a one that the talented developer regretted ever since, as it practically ruined his good standing with the gamers' community. Whichever slogan we take into account, the message was clear: "this game is hard as nails". And so it was. It was dubbed unfair by some, and infuriating by others. However, those who managed to finish it walk tall and proud among the gamerfolk.

Daikatana is a FPS that brought many fresh ideas to the genre, even if it was a tad late to the party. It has a very retro-futuristic feel to it, mixing the 1990s and 2000s aesthetics. It features a slew of original maps, interesting mechanics, and fancy weaponry--including the titular Japanese long sword. Most importantly: its just as much rewarding, as it is punishing. Because, you know, "no pain--no gain".

Accept John Romero's challenge and prove everyone, including yourself, that you can beat the legendary Daikatana, available on GOG.com for only $5.99.
The AI still dumb and retarded. But thing is when you're on Chapter 2 suddenly your weapons are much more useful and practical (completely new set), the level got bigger with clever design and the enemies which not flat out overpowered you, unlike all the drones and cyborg in Chapter 1.

Personally i don't get the feeling of being handicap anymore, instead i feel like i can do this without resorting to cheating and reloading saves. It's much more level playing field. Your sidekick also benefited from bigger environment. Shame Romero and his team never got the chance to build on these promising latter chapters, no second chance. I don't know what he's up to these days, heard he's working on mobile and facebook games. Can anybody convince him to make one last comeback?

He runs a game development studio called Loot Drop which fairly recently had a (later cancelled) Kickstarter project called "An Old-school RPG".

Thanks for the info. I still believe FPS is his bread & butter even though he hasn't produce one for quite long time. Also, he just replied my email, and very quick too (about an hour). Said he plan on making FPS title someday. I'm happy to hear that, at least he's not giving up.

Back to the game, i'm in the middle of Episode 3 and it's getting better and creative here. Some of the weapon and enemy design and behaviour were quite advance considering the technology at the time. Maybe the unpatched / vanilla version was terrible, considering the outside factor such as the hype, marketing etc. Fast forward 10 years later, the one that sold here on GOG by no mean is one of the worst game ever. Apart from the AI and questionable Episode 1 artistic and map level design, the game is highly playable.
*Possible spoilers ahead!*

This may sound weird......but I actually LIKED the first episode(futuristic tech setting/interesting areas[Computer core, crematorium, Mishima Burger plant, etc]

Also to SnickerSnack: IIRC Hiro and his companions DO comment on certain things(Like parts of the Mishima Burger Factory, etc) but only if you get close enough to them while having your companions nearby.

Yeah, Superfly was cracking me up at McMishima. I was thinking more in terms of the first 'Marshes' map and the sewers when Hiro is all alone. Hiro is mute like Gordon Freeman when he's not in a cutscene. He should have been a Col Blade. :(

Well at least there's all the cool stuff the companions say after those levels......also the marshes/sewers are fairly short(compared to the rest of the game.).
Another thing that i found interesting is each stage has it's own lore. Yes, your ultimate objective is to hunt down and kill Mishima but that's more like an afterthought or final showdown after you went through couple of maps. It's like watching a fantasy movie. I'm in chapter 3; Plague Village at snowy mountain where the king and his people turn into monster. I like this settings more than the second episode. I'm looking forward to finish this game before moving on to SS2.

Yeah EP 3 was always one of my favorites(Right next to the first episode).
