RaggieRags: isn't Catacombs 3D the first FPS? I don't know how fun these are now, but this is a pretty important piece of gaming history.
I think Hovertank was id's first FPS. Catacombs 3D was the first one with texture mapping.
I only remember playing Catacomb Abyss 3D, but remember really liking it back in the day.
Lots and lots of enemies simultaniously, destructable walls, enemies coming out of the walls or the ground, searching for keys and probably some things I forgot.
Very nice variation on the FPS in the early days of the FPS genre.

They are actually quite fun. I should replay them but i think they are more fun then wolfenstein 3D.
Oooh nice. These games are surprisingly fun given that age...

Well I guess they are fun if, like me, you miss Wolf 3D every now and then :D
Glad this showed up. :) Good deal for 5.99, like 1.20 per game. (And at a 50% off sale, like .60 per game. :P)

I wonder what the "music track" is.

Keep digging, id isn't really the first to go in this direction

Hey, does this mean id has come to GOG, or is this through someone else?

These oldies come via Flat Rock Software who have some SoftDick titles, just like Dangerous Dave.

JMich: Venture into the depths of FPS gaming history!

Catacombs Pack, a collection of games that lay the foundations of the first-person shooter genre on the PC bundled with their 2D dungeon-running predecessor, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

In 1989 John Carmack designed and released a top-down action game featuring a mage blasting his way through an old, moldy dungeon. Who would have thought, that this simplistic title would evolve into a series that would take gamers into a whole new dimension. There are other games often credited with creating the very first bits of the FPS genre, but if you asked John Carmack, he would probably tell you that it all began in the Catacombs.

Catacombs Pack features five games. The Catacomb is a top-down dungeon-runner with simplistic yet exciting gameplay. Catacomb 3D: Descent takes that basic idea into the realm of 3D and into the first-person perspective. The trilogy that follows--Catacomb Abyss 3D, Catacomb Armageddon, and Catacomb Apocalypse--add a fantasy story of sorcery and blood on top of that, to create an experience that would capture the gamers' imagination and sprout into a whole new genre.

Before the call of duty doomed you to roam unreal places and exterminate predatory aliens with a big freakin' gun, there were Catacombs. Get the whole Catacombs Pack for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

Edit: apologies
You just got Roman's crown :)

Anyway, this is gaming history, and yes - it is far from the first FPS games. Arguably, the first ones are and [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze_War]Maze War from 1974.

I'm aware, I just answered a different question. ;)

My candidate for first fps isn't a shooter but a 2.5D maze game with smooth 360 degree movement from 1982.

Way Out

SoftDick titles?
I am happy to see so many gems from the age of shareware released here. They make GOG feel a lot more complete, in a way, and I really hope id/Bethesda comes along so we can get Wolf3D and Doom at some point too (I know they're on Steam, but one of the things about GOG is that I feel it's about more than selling games, it's also a way for gamers to experience the history of PC gaming).
