Classic dungeon crawling awesomeness!

Anvil of Dawn, a classic DOS-era dungeon crawler with first-person perspective, sprite graphics, a vast and rich world to explore, and dozens of hours of great and motivating gameplay, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99

Every fantasy land needs a hero, it seems. There's always an evil entity of some sort that menaces the realm and its people. Surprisingly, the people never stand up to it. They prefer to wait for a group of adventurers, or even just one champion who knows the importance of wearing leg armor around archers. Inevitably someone comes to the rescue and saves the realm one spider-infested cellar at a time. Schematic as it may sound, we love to relive those adventures over and over again. Even if one dungeon looks pretty much the same as any other, you still get this rush of excitement when making your first steps on its dusty floor. It's not about originality of the concept. It's about the involving gameplay, that lets you forget about the world around you. Here's a perfect game to do just that!

Anvil of Dawn has everything you ever loved about 1990s role-playing games. It presents you with a large and diverse gameworld, full of monsters and enemies to slay, riches and powerful items to loot, quests to carry out, weapons to wield, spells to cast, and an evil overlord to challenge. It was praised for its great pacing allowing to keep the gamer entertained and intrigued, always presenting him with something new to do and achieve. The imaginative sprite-based graphics, solid gameplay mechanics, and many classic gameplay ideas make this title a shining example of well executed cRPG design that makes us call its period "the good old times". Highly recommended!

If a true old-school cRPG experience is what you're looking for, you simply can't afford to miss Anvil of Dawn, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

Erich_Zann: Only the second Ravenloft game (Stone Prophet) played in an Egyptian-like plane. First one was vampire / gothic horror stuff. Good times.
Was referring to Stone Prophet yes, Ravenloft 2 and Anvil came out in the same year.

coldalarm: Can you play a lady in this, or do you have to be Ron Jeremy?
He looks more like Brian Blessed to me!

Stooner: Thanks! and ha! That was exactly what he was doing (admittedly)... hoarding the damn potions.... :D
That's something I did far too often myself. I'd been better off using them freely, but I still claim they would have not spared me entirely from taking tea brakes while my character just sits around waiting for the points to return.
Had not heard of this game before. Looks like it'd be up my alley so wishlisted for now while waiting for it to go on sale. Thanks GOG.

jdgremmer: And, yes, the game has speech for the handful of characters you bump into. The voice acting is pretty bad though, so you may wish it didn't =)
I thought the voice acting was pretty good myself, at least for the time the game was released. The female main character was fine. I thought she sounds a bit like Xena. :-)

I also liked the grim atmosphere, and it sounds like I also liked the game better than you... but I have to agree, it's not that great of a game.

nijuu: Hmmm another one ive never heard of
Haaa!! Me neither.... And I used to be very familiar with video games in the 90s! Well, anyway thanks gog Team for introducing gamers to another good old game!

Starmaker: This game is teh awesome and I hate everyone who's going into it spoiler-free.

You lucky bastards.

MasodikTiasma: God, you must really hate me, then... ;-)
If it makes you feel better, I hate those who are now looking at letsplays even more.

MasodikTiasma: I've read on wikipedia this game "was released on CD and features fully spoken dialogue and several pre-rendered cutscenes." Is the game really fully voiced? What about the version available here on GOG, does it have voices?
It must be (I'm at the office so I can't check), GOG doesn't sell games with limited functionality without a notice (as in "the game's multiplayer servers have been taken offline and the only available multiplayer is LAN" on some other titles). The "version" (pirate rip) without voices is about 50 Mbytes IIRC.

...Don't judge me, I waited seven years to get my hands on that version.

...And 11 more years to get my hands on a legit license.

Holy crap, the better half of my life has the "looking for a copy of AoD" process running in the background.

Sorry... I have no other way to see if this game is good... but I looked to it just a little bit... ;p
Two quick questions for those who have it:
1) Does i run in DOSBox or does it need Windows?
2) Does it have keyboard controls or is it 100% mouse driven?
someone please tell me this release is a sign for War Wind I and II

I think you can play it entirely by mouse, except when you are writing your save file.
Nice release, it doesn't pardon you guys for resurrecting Magna Cum Laude but it will be taken into account when you're judged.
Never heared about this one, but looks interesting, wishlisted for now.

That's not what I meant, I was wondering if I *have* to play entirely by mouse, not if I can. if hate it when a game is 100% mouse control; Ultima Underworld had WASD controls, why did no one copy that?
Is there any difference between this and Ultima Underworld 1 & 2? :P
