AI War: Fleet Command + 6 DLC Campaigns!

AI War Collection, containing the base AI War: Fleet Command space strategy epic combining 4X gameplay on a galactic scale and tactical RTS combat on the planetary level, and its six elaborate DLC expansions including the newly-released Destroyer of Worlds add-on, is available 60% off for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on GOG.com. That's only $6.79 for the first week! Alternatively, you can get just the base game and get the DLC pack later (both of them also 60% off for a week!).

Humanity has already fought its war against the machines -- and lost. Now it's your job to win the ultimate David vs Goliath battle. Go forth into the galaxy, steal AI technology, recapture those planets you must in order to achieve your ends, and save what remains of humanity. But draw too much attention to yourself, and the full might of the AI overlords will come crashing down. The inattention of the larger AI is our only hope: a small resistance, too insignificant even to be noticed by the AI central command, has survived. These are the forces you will command. The AI subcommanders will fight you to the death when they see you -- but your glimmer of opportunity comes from quietly subduing those subcommanders without alerting central processing to the danger until it's too late.

AI War Collection features some of the most unique AI ever seen in the genre, set in procedurally-generated galaxies with 50,000+ ships in them. It's a unique blend of 4X and grand strategy thinking at the galaxy-map level with RTS mechanics and tactics at the planetary level. The combined edition offered here contains the base Fleet Command game and all 6 of the released expansions: The Zenith Remnant, Children of Neinzul, Light of the Spire, Ancient Shadows, Vengeance Of The Machine, and the brand new Destroyer of Worlds add-on.

The human race has only one last chance at survival and the resposibility to take it can be yours for only $6.79 in AI War Collection on GOG.com. The special 60% off release discount (for the combined edition as well as the separate base game and DLC pack) lasts until Monday, August 25, at 9:59AM GMT.

drealmer7: I haven't read a lot about the game, just what is here on GOG and a little elsewhere with a little gameplay I've watched. Nothing I've seen says anything about tower-defense being the type of game it is. Is that what it is like more than 4x or RTS? Have you actually played?
I noticed that the trailer had a blurb to RPS, so I found the original article which explains a lot about the gameplay. And in the comments section is a link to Arcen's "fast facts" about the game:

Fast Facts about AI War

Edit: ... and bought.

No, I haven’t played AI Wars yet, though I’m itching to install it and give it a go.

I watched a decent gameplay video which gave me a good idea of what to expect. I see it as a Tower defense/offense style of combat because of the ship formations and movement, placement of turrets and minefields around system entry points and bases plus the streaming hordes of enemy that attack.

Tower defense/offense is an RTS genre, just not the traditional base building, unit upgrading CnC or Starcraft style, and 4x covers a lot of games from real time to turn based gameplay. I mostly play strategy games, and have about 20 installed right now... :/ though I've been on a Borderlands (1/2) bender for the last six months.

One other thing that makes this a must get for me, is that the enemy is smart, they will even retreat when overwhelmed, and I favor any games that have good AI, since I don’t often play multiplayer games.
It does have tower defense elements.
You have to protect your worlds with ships, turrents and minefields.the ai will send fleets to attack you and the madder the ai gets the bigger the enemy fleet is.

That just sounds like RTS to me. Part of an RTS is having a base camp and a defense perimeter setup which is appropriate for where the enemy will come from andhow the lay out of the land/world leaves you vulnerable and where you want to make sure you have protected etc. But, I will watch more gameplay before the sale ends monday and make a final decision. It's so tempting because of the intelligence of the AI and the variety and depth/scope of possibilities. I also love good music/ambiance in a game.

The difference here is that you start massively underpowered compared to the AI. If you just try and rush in and take too many sectors, you will be crushed like an insect. You really need to strategize and be quick to adapt.
Starting playing this last night, went through the tutorials and am now playing the 10-world starter universe. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of information and options available in the game, plus all the things you can build. Clearly there is a lot of strategy and planning required, especially in a full-size campaign where you have to manage dozens of worlds. But so far it's playing more intuitively than I expected, given how much there is to do.

I can't tell if I have the DLC enabled or not in the tutorial universe, but I suspect not. So there will be even more to view when I get into the universe proper. I just have to decide if I want to do a moderate 40-world game or go for the full-scale 80-world campaign.

Reading this makes me wonder how beginner friendly it is in general. Is there a manual in the game folder or anything like it?

This came up earlier in the thread, but:

No, there is no manual.

The game is continuously updated, so that mechanics from previous versions of the game are changed, dropped, replaced based on what's working and what isn't. So it's constantly evolving (albeit over a long timespan).

The tutorial seems to be pretty good and there are links to a FAQ and a wiki available ingame. I can't tell you much more, as I have only started playing the tutorials myself as of yet.

But have a look yourself:

Started up the game, and i've just stopped because the music...

Piano solo, and it's so beautiful....
You might be interested in this: Arcen Games Piano Collection, Vol. 1

13 songs, 50 minutes of music, all of them piano versions of Arcen Games songs. 2 of them with vocals from the composer's wife who has a great voice. You should really listen to track 12 and 13.

And it only costs 1$.

The other posts are correct, the tutorial is excellent and should prepare you for the game itself. It's still up to you to discover certain things, but it is comprehensive enough to give you the crucial info you need to play well.
