Problem with these threads is people understandably almost always recommend what they have so take everything we say with a pinch of salt.

I don't know how they compare but I'm perfectly happy with my logitech z4's and they can be picked up quite cheaply. There not as deep in the bass as some but the seem to exhibit more control as a result of that.

I pretty much agree with GorgorothX anything from the major manufacturers at a bargain price would get my vote.
Logitech Z506 are good speakers if you're on a budget.
I got a pair of Bose stereo speakers (Companion 2 series II) when my 5.1 packed in.

Was a great choice, especially since I didn't have the space for the 5.1 any more.

Can't remember how much they cost, but it was less than £100. Might have been as little as £50-60... it was a couple of years back now though, and they're still working perfectly.
