Few recommendations if you're a Wii owner:
2D platformers:
I found New Super Mario Bros. Wii to have a really nice difficulty curve for beginners. It's slower paced than the older Mario games, and the first levels are really easy, but the game quickly gets more challenging as you progress. It never feels impossible or cheap though, and you can unlock some hint videos showing you secrets or good playthroughs. Also, if you keep failing, the game will offer you the option to let the super-guide do the level for you, allowing you to skip it and keep progressing.
If you're looking for something really easy, then you might want to take a look at Kirby's Epic Yarn. You can't die/fail in this game, instead the game has you collecting beads that you lose when you get hit / fall in a pit. You get a score at the end of the level depending on how many beads you had, but even if you fail miserably you can still progress to the next level. The early levels were so easy I'd consider them soporific to be honest. Still, not a bad game overall.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is on the hard side. It has some really challenging levels (some I had to restart around 60 times before I managed to complete them ... yeah, I suck). It's really fun though, probably my favorite 2d platformer on the Wii. Has the super-guide too, though really if you're playing this game, it should be because you want a decent challenge. If you end up really enjoying platformers, I'd say get it. Otherwise, skip it.
A Boy and his Blob has platforming elements, mixed with a bit of puzzle game play. It's slower paced and the platforming parts are relatively easy. Some of the bosses can be frustrating though. Third and Fourth bosses feel pretty cheap in particular. Not one of my favorite platformers but still an enjoyable game with a different style.
For 3D platformers, the only ones I played on the Wii are the Super Mario Galaxy Games, but they're both really good. I'd say my favorite is the second one. Level design feels tighter, a bit less repetition, and somewhat more challenging. The 2nd one has a super-guide feature, the first one doesn't.
