My picks would be:

NWN
Gothic I & II
Icewind Dale II
Vampire - The Maquerade Redemption

The last would be my choice for you as is the cheaper, it's not very long yet quite involving so it wont take much of your time.

aaronrex: Can anyone here recommend a good RPG that would conform to that, and runs on Win7 64 without too much hassle?

Thanks in advance!
Sacred Gold Its simple, easy, pure hack and slash.. story is good but not like Baldurs gate good and you can jump in and out like crazy...

Sacred conforms to your every request, NWN would be the next option... its more hacking and less reading ^_^

kalirion: Definitely Planescape Torment. It's not as big as some of these other epic games.

Fenixp: Yes, totally "I want something that involves leveling, and hacking and slashing, upgrading gear, and some plot." I'm afraid that's not exactly a good recommendation in this case, unless you're using Joe's "The Guild" logic
Well there is hacking and slashing. And leveling. And quite a bit of plot. I guess there's no upgrading gear, but there is upgrading companions, which you can think of as gear :)

i dont think PS:T as a hack & slash for just a reason: you can pause, analyze everything, and then make your move. its a lot slower than most hack & slashes. and i hope that by "quite a bit of plot", you mean AN AWFUL LOT.

aaronrex: Hi, just signed up and looking forward to playing some good old games here! I have always had the nostalgic feeling that the late 90's early 00's were the golden age of classic RPGs, even tho I have never played many of them (due to owning a poor puter at the time).

I've never really played the likes of Planescape: Torment, the Baldur's Gate series or Arcanum.

I am especially interested in the last there, Arcanum, but I'm hesitant. For the next 6 months I'll be finishing my University studies and don't want to sink myself into something too epic. I want something that involves leveling, and hacking and slashing, upgrading gear, and some plot, but not the overwhelming scope of things like Baldur's Gate. Just something I can pick up late in the evening for an hour before bed and come back to a few days later. I'm sure you know the type of play experience I mean! :-)

Can anyone here recommend a good RPG that would conform to that, and runs on Win7 64 without too much hassle?

Thanks in advance!
Arcanum doesn't take oodles of time compared to the other two. It's a good, first, classic RPG for those who play them. Its story is first rate too, it rings in second to Planescape, but there's no shame in that since PS:T might have the best storyline of all time.
PS:T could be played on a netbook and if you go minimal and only run your core 10 processes and PS:T you can just play it all day like a massively HUGE handheld.. with the pause feature you dont need mega quick reflexes to fight...

in fact you only have a handful of fights you'd ever need to be in!

You probably could run it on higher settings without killing processes on a net book. Net books are more powerful than the computers that were out when PS:T was released.

This list WINS... Torchlight is only Singleplayer though... Torchlight 2 will be full co-op so maybe that could be moved... everything else is co-op/multi... Titans Quest is by far the greatest game there that will seriously eat your time away... its fantastic!

yes but the game is so good ahah you can fish for a while in the game if the game gets too stressful :), cant wait for the second part as a player of diablo 2 for over 8 years, i must say i am expecting a lot from torchlight 2 rather than diablo 3

Not sold on GOG, but I seriously recommend Ultima VII. One of the best PC RPGs in existence and all too often left out.
Torchlight 2 has a ful dev cycle behind it... T1 was a year long get it out NOW, i mean some of the voive acting was recoded on the floor of there office under a blanket (no really)

they have a crapton of cash now and alot of hard work done, its all design and story now for T2 and im beyond pumped... i dont even care that much for Diablo 3

Blizzards new DRM bullshit with SC2 and inability to play offline in any form or even do multi without with friends sucks... no cheats no custom mods nothing or they cancel your account :(

where is the damn fun!? IM going for Torhlight 2, Grim Dawn and Dungeon Siege 3, and most DEF The Witcher 2... so many better less restrictive games out there...
