Wow, it might even be buggier than the original!

Tarnicus: How did you cancel your pre-order? If I had known it was coming to GoG, I would have waited!
Crosmando is exactly right. Just contact Steam support.

It is a problem with the Goldmaster and the autopatcher. (Well, people wanted the oldschool feel)

The Steam version (and probably any other digital release) will have less problems.

I can ask one of the beta guys, how the current Steambuild is working. But from what I have heard so far, it runs and plays very good.

The devs will do small patches (roughly two per week) for bugs found in the proper release version, until everything is in order.

Edit:

And for the record, the game is still unreleased. They are now working day and night rushing a patch that was supposed to go online tomorrow.

They should push it back another month or two, releasing in this state will only hurt them
I'm more surprised if a new PC release is not initially a bugfest, if it isn't some super-simple indie game, or a port from some years old console game.

I'll check this game in, say, one year (maybe I will buy it far in advance, though, like I've done to most of my games so far). Hopefully they've ironed out most of the bugs by then. If not, maybe this will eventually get some user-made fan patches, just like so many other PC games that people consider timeless classics today, but which were quite broken upon release.

SirPrimalform: WTF, Google Translate translates Das Schwarze Auge as Realms of Arkania?

It's called Google Translate, not Google Localise!

Still, not as ridiculous as when I saw kilograms translated as pounds.
That's not even localisation, as Realms of Arkania is the name of the 'series'. It'd be like translating Dungeons & Dragons as Baldur's Gate.

Edit: Gotta say I'm disappointed by the news, as I was really looking forward to it.

The series is unofficially known as the "Northlands Trilogy" in Germany due to the fact that it is set in the Northern part of Aventuria (the main continent in the Dark Eye setting). Realms of Arkania was a title made-up by Sir-Tech (who localized and released the game in North America), they are continuing to use it because it's the title English speakers know it by. I have no idea what "Arkania" means, if anything.

These problems sound too serious to fix quickly.

I hope they can make it and I'm willing to give a little slack for small devs, but releasing games in this state is very poor PR, not to mention unfair to the customers.

That's good to know. Thank you.

I went through the whole thread over at schicksalsklinge.com (thank god for being fluent in german) The main problem I see is that the retailers sent out the physical copies too early, but it's also kind of sad that due to time constraints they actually made the gold master an alpha/beta version with a lot of things missing. I also saw that quite a few people from the community beta test the release for them with the interim patches they got between the early release last week and now.

I really hope they get a grip on this and can do some damage control, because I really want a HD version of the whole trilogy. After RadonLabs went under and the Drakensang series turned into that craptastic web diablo clone, this is our last hope for a good DSA game :(

It's Drakensang in name only (and it's still by RadonLabs, IIRC, but they're now called BigPoint Berlin and have a fraction of the staff). There's no actual DSA content there. I think the 'real' DSA MMO is called Herokon, but it's not out in English yet, and the site seems really thin on content.

There's also Demonicon out later this year, which is a DSA game, but I think it's an action RPG rather than a traditional ruleset based title. But whilst the boxart is out, and it looks near-ish release, it seems to be available only on Amazon right now. No GamersGate, Steam, etc. pre-orders, which is odd.

It's a catch 22 for the devs.

A) You either postpone the retail sale of the game, meaning it will roughly be shipped a month after Steam/GOG is out.

B) You postpone the Steam/GOG launch, until the master is pressed and shipped. Meaning the majority of the people can't play a finished game.

C) You press and ship the goldmaster "as is" and make a day 0 patch up to the current version. But then you have some idiots breaking street date and complaining about an unfinished game.

Personally, I like option D) most. Be done with the pointless plastic crap and stop wasting time and money on retail games.

No, it is localisation. Realms of Arkania was made up during the English localisation, there's nothing in the German title that translates as Realms of Arkania.

More like translating Dungeons & Dragons: Baldur's Gate as (in another language) Lands of Mystery: Baldur's Gate, you see?
Amazing that a game released in 1992 is less buggier than a game released in 2013, goes to show the state of the games industry these days.

Well judging from the german consumer responses, A or B would've been better. They would've bought the boxed CE anyway. Hell, I wanted one of River of Time but they were never made for the international release xD
Anyway, they have a solid purchase from me if what comes out tomorrow is not the same thing that video shows off. Because if there's really going to be a patch rain of 2-4 per week, then the GOG version will get the short end of the stick. Steam will auto update, and we'll have to wait for the patches to roll in. Or do they have their own patching system?
