Okay, here's the deal: I'm looking for a new keyboard. Now that in itself isn't a big deal, but I want the following:

1) Illuminated keys. I use my computer often in the (almost) dark, so illuminated keys are a must.
2) It should be silent. The keys shouldn't make a sound (or at least be very quiet) when I press them.
3) It should cost around 35 euro's, although I might be persuaded to go up to 50.

I've seen the KeySonic KSK-8001 for 36 euro. Anyone's got an opinion on that one?

The Steelseries Merc Stealth looks great (I can get that for around 50 euro), but I have no idea how silent that thing is.

Logitech has some nice stuff as well, but I'm afraid they're a little too pricey for me.

So, any advice on a quiet, illuminated (gaming) keyboard on a budget?

Erk, for that money you won't get a good one I'm afraid. And silent keyboards are very very hard to find - they generally get more noisy with use.

I have similar criteria but with soft key strokes added and the best I could find is the Microsoft SideWinder X6 - not cheap enough to fit within your budget, though, but it's very excellent and backlight with a dial to regulate how strong the backlight should be.

I have tried other backlit keyboards but this is the cheapest decent one I could find.
Good luck in finding one. If you want something truly silent, you'll want something with laptop-like keys. Unfortunately, I don't know a single example that has backlighting.

I also have a SideWinder X6 and it's quiet enough for me. I don't know if the X4 is any quieter, but it's a bit simpler and therefore cheaper as well (around 40 euros).

Yes, the Apple style keyboard are pretty silent but pretty bad for gaming and not backlight usually not to mention about two-three times as expensive.
I'd save for the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard. I use it at work and it's everything you want. I don't think I'd drop the kind of money that you're talking about on keyboards that actually cost the kind of money you're talking about.

Just get a light for the keyboard and then focus on getting a keyboard that's quite.

Personally, I use this one http://www.quirky.com/products/77-Mantis-Clip-On-Task-Lamp

It's wide enough of a beam to cover the entire keyboard, without getting in the eyes.
save up for a touch screen pc thing and use the windows intergrated one.
I use a Saitek Eclipse || - not silent but not that loud either - and I'm pretty heavy handed.
Excellent keybaord. When it came out it was around £35 - so, if you can get one, it'll probably be a lot cheaper now.

I've just did a quick check - they don't seem to be available any more but Saitek do others around the same price point which list one of their features as: "High precision soft-touch keys for faster, quieter typing".
Or - save up for this ...

I use the Logitech G110. It has some nice binding/volume control/illumination buttons, and fairly silent keys.

I use the Merc Stealth and it's held up okay (I type a lot for work as well, I often write code from home). If you don't mind the layout (it's good for a lot of games and the software is easy to use, actually braindead easy) then it's a great choice. The back lighting is actually very bright in comparison to a lot of other choices.

The only other cheap, illuminated keyboard that isn't utter shit is the Saitek Eclipse 2. Neither are what I call "silent" but they aren't noisy as hell either. If you really don't want to hear it when you slam your space key down you might not like either, though:(

EDIT: Eclipse 2s are definitely still for sale online, try Amazon if you fail finding one elsewhere.

Problem solved.

I came across a Gigabyte Aivia K8100 for just under 50 euro and I went for it. It's a gaming keyboard, illuminated, and although not 100% silent, it's quiet enough for me. (It's even possible to make it even quieter with a silicon cover, which works fine when typing - though I don't think I'll use it when gaming.)

Maybe for a hardcore gamer this board isn't optimal (the macro-keys for one are at an inconvienent place), but for me it works well.

If anyone's interested:

Anyway, although in the end I went in a different direction: thanks for your input on a new keyboard (yeah, that lame pun was intended).
