I know this isn't the usual vein of GOG Q's, but I'm unfamiliar with Apple products so here goes:

My Dad just picked up a used iPhone 4 from a friend of his. He needs it for work, he'll likely only ever use it for e-mail, Google maps and taking notes. Probably no media use. My question is: Should I go help him set up iTunes on his computer? As in, is it necessary given his purposes? I've been told by some people it's necessary just for activation and by others that it is not needed at all. Thanks.

I believe buying apps is hard w/o iTunes, but perhaps there's a way to do it just with the phone. If you have iTunes on your computer I know you can buy from there and it'll sync automatically the next time the phone is on WiFi.

You don't need a computer to sync or buy anything. iPhone is easily activated without a PC / Mac. You can also buy & download music and apps directly on the phone. You can even backup your settings etc. to iCloud (you need to create an account, easily done on the phone too).
