Weclock: I really don't like looking at the PSP as a portable media player, because as one it lacks one of the most basic features that come with nearly every PMP.
a sync cable.
Certainly it is just a mini-usb cable, but the system itself does not come with one, meaning of course if you don't have one, in order to use your PSP as a PMP you have to spend extra money on that cable.
It's a great media player, and I love the screen, but the fact that it requires that purchase before you can use it as a media player, really limits it imo.

Aliasalpha: Don't you also have to buy a memory card to store media on though? Surely its basically the same deal. Or even irrelevant to some people, I know I never sync my PDA to transfer data, my memory card reader is faster & easier to handle than sync software.
I suppose it was a bit annoying to have to buy the adapter so I can plug headphones into my touch cruise (it's only got a mini-usb) but it was hardly a long term annoyance.

It's cheap to get a card. The transcoding takes time, but it's pretty good to have a gaming system along with an iPod-ish gadget.

the biggest problem i have with the psp is that it isn't much of a game system, there's really only a handful of games worth playing.. everything else is sort of.. "been there and done that."
If it ain't hacked it isn't worth it, but if you do have one that's hacked, the media player options it has is fantastic, but you have to work so hard and get to a certain point before it gets there.
Plus, you have to struggle with the device to recognize more than 4gb.
and it's a hassle to hack one, I had do to a lot to hack my old slim.. finally the d pad crapped out so i sold it to gamestop. :)
making the argument to buy a PSP because it's a media player, is a very poor argument. Making the argument that if it's hacked you can play emulated games is a good argument. I see the music player as simply an addon.

That's what I said, well partially, because mine is not hacked (3000), but I enjoy the games anyway. If you carry a PSP with you anyway, then it will make a good media player as well.
The interface is absolutely perfect and while you can't just throw any video file at it (they need to be MPEG 4 ASP or AVC with AAC in MP4), there's plenty of good conversion software around.

If you want a portable for emulation and media playing, the GP2X would be the obvious choice.

Wishbone: If you want a portable for emulation and media playing, the GP2X would be the obvious choice.

I've heard a lot about the GP2x, the only real questions I have about it, is how well is it supported? I see new hacks for the PSP weekly, or at least updates..

Necropost sorry ^^


My cowon J3 is facing a stupid issue. It's working well except one thing, only one that force me to change my PMP. The usb plug don't work anymore. that's all. Because of that, it can't be recognized by windows, so i can't put new music in it futhermore i can't recharge the battery. This PMP is so perfect, the battery life is just incredible it's like 30 or 40 hours. And this model isn't sell since 2 or 3 years i think.


I don't know which replacement to choose. Probably a Fiio X3 and i don't know when i'll can afford this cost ^^'
