I got some birthday money that I morally don't feel like spending on bills, so I want to buy that "Playstation" branded 3D TV / monitor thing.

not really so much because I want to hook it up to my Playstation and use it as a TV (though it's not like I wont ever do that too), but because for $250 it seems like it has got decent specifications and would be a really kick ass PC monitor.

I know the size is a little on the small side, but seeing as how it's 1080p / 240 hz and and most TVs for less than $400 are only 720 and 60hz ...

for the record; I have a 22in 1080p / 60hz wide screen monitor for my PC and our main TV is a 32in standard def TV that I would like to upgrade at some point (for what it is, its still got a good picture and it's not like I'm in a rush to replace our DVD collection with BD versions) so with that in mind as what I will be mixing this thing into; is it worth it, or is it mostly a gimmick and I should wait to get a full sized TV?

Based on what I've read, the monitor provides a phenomenal picture, both in 3D and 2D, regardless of what its source is, but the build quality seems to differ from unit to unit - some work fine, others are terrible, period, while others have occasional models. The most common issue seems to be the monitor going to black for about a second. While I think you should take the risk, I recommend you do some research of your own. You may find something to sway your favor either way.

I'd recommend buying from a retailer that has a an extended warranty if possible. Most of the time those are basically scams, but for some goods it's money well spent. I've had good luck with BestBuy's warranties for the most part, but I'm sure there are other options as well.

As far as the OP's question about 3D, I haven't found it to be particularly compelling, although they did a really good job adding it to the Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY. It's mostly subtle except for the occasional swarm of bats flying out of the screen when you finish objectives.

Ultimately, it's subtle enough that you don't notice it most of the time.
I've used the demo of it they have at my local Gamestop. The 3D effect was nice and didn't hurt my head like some can. If you have friends you play games with, I recommend it just for eliminating split screen multiplayer. It overlays both screens so it acts like both players have their own TV's, which I thought was a really nice feature.

As far as PC use goes, I don't know how non-Nvidia 3d is, but the Nvidia 3d vision is amazing. Being attacked by monsters in Metro 2033 is bad enough without 3D, but it really feels like the enemies are in front of you. I don't know if the same effect can be achieved with the PS monitor, but I don't see why they wouldn't be if you just got the receiver and glasses to add to it.

I think that tends to vary from person to person depending upon how strong ones imagination is as well as how strong ones spacialization sense is. I've personally never found it to be worthwhile as movies and games are already 3-dimensional. At least when done properly.

Also, I remember without sound and with rather primitive graphics regularly jumping out of my seat playing the Catacombs Abyss back in the early '90s without any need for 3D graphics of this type.

Interestingly enough, if you play the Doomsday version of Doom, it feels incredibly 3D compared with the vanilla and I'm not sure how they managed that.

But, the OP definitely should check it out in person as that's the only way to really know if it's a necessary upgrade. Although, if the monitors are that good for 2D it isn't as important.
god damn it!

hit a snag ....

firstly I just realised that Tigerdirect and CircutCity.com (the two sellers I was debating between buying from) are actually identical sites, then I discovered that CirciutCity.com actually has nothing to do with the old circuit city, then I discovered that the same company owns and operates both sites ... so buying from either would be the same thing.

then I realized that both of them list their free shipping option as "econo" and frankly I don't trust any kind of monitor/tv with a shipping option that can't even bother to put the "y" on the end of it, much less a 3D tv.

but if I'm gonna end up upgrading to the paid shipping options, why would I shop with a company that has a sleazy reputation (Sysmax) instead of something I trust / like more?

... because the next option with fufillment by Amazon (amazon being one of the few that I explicitly trust with shipping) is $315.

fuck.
So tiny/11
Not worth it
