StingingVelvet: I was a NES and SNES kid and a LOT of those games suck ass now. I can still play them for nostalgia, but stuff like Final Fantasy VI is not nearly as well written or fun to play as I remember. Stuff like Aero the Acrobat is just annoying to play, not fun or challenging.

On the PC though pretty much anything I liked I still like. I started PC gaming for really reals in 1993 or so and all those old shooters and RPGs are still good for me today. I think it's because they were always made for adults, where as NES and SNES games were made for kids.

Pappy55: I was never a big console gamer. I'm still not even though i own a 360 and Ps3 (but it would be a shme for an awesome game to come out exclusive to one system and not be able to play it)

I grew up with computers Commodore 64, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200 and PC..

I still fire up the old console and arcade emulators, i mean jeasus i have about 12dvd's full of retro games.
some games never age and are still fun ('Elite' series anyone?) but some should stay as an old happy memory. too many of the old Amiga and snes games I used to love when playing again i hated them and it tained my memories.

I guess thats why im so selective on what games I will buy on GOG.
Yeah, i'm about the same..grew up on computers...i've never even owned a NES (GASP!) and got a SNES rather late in it's "prime". I consider myself a PC gamer with a sprinkle of console for added flavor. I guess you'd say i'm a Sony Fanboy? Athough i really don't consider myself a fanboy of anything. I've had all the PS's, altho I do find that rather odd. With my PC background, you'd think i'd be all over the Xbox.
I used to love playing RPGs on consoles and I still do to some extent, but recently I've come to realize that I'm a little tired of JRPGs beyond the SNES era, and this is why it's hard for me to play through them again. On the other hand, I love to watch people play them and discover the joy of certain games for the first time.

Fuzzyfireball: Just keep trying and you'll eventually get it. iirc it takes about 3-5 rockets.
Well, it turns out that I can no longer play any of the old FPS games (Dooms, Heretic, Hexen, Quakes, etc). WHY, you ask? Is it hardware or software problem? The answer is NO. It turns out that all the old FPS are just too damn fast. Now that I'm older, its so fast that its giving me severe motion sickness. After playing a few levels, I felt like throwing up and had to lay down for 30 minutes and I'm still feeling queesy. I haven't played these games in almost 10 years.

Looks like I can only handle todays slower style FPS like Halo. DAMN!

It might pass If you keep trying. I have that whenever I switch to a knew TV or monitor. I get nauseous real bad for the first few days, but after that Im fine.
I'm a bit surprised how many console => PC converts there seems to be on this site. My belief earlier was that what people play as kids (consoles or computers) defines what kinds of game controllers and genres they'll like later also. Ie. they remember playing Super Mario Brothers on NES as kids, and have grown to bigger and badder console games. And it you used to play JRPGs, you wouldn't really like CRPG style.

Or course nowadays it is not so clear cut, ie. there's not so real distinction between console and PC games, except for controls maybe. But still, if a person likes e.g. RTS games, I assume he was a computer gamer in heart.

I was a computer gamer as a kid, even played Catchum and Ladder on CP/M machine (Kaypro II) with their awful keyboard controls. While some home computers I had were quite "console like" for many of their games also (like TI-99/4A, Spectravideo SVI-328, even Commodore Amiga to some extend...), still to me they seemed to be stepping stones more towards PC gaming than PS3/XBox360 gaming.

PSX (PS1) was the first console I ever bought, I bought it mainly for Gran Turismo and a few other PS games I was convinced I wanted to play. But it didn't make me a big console gamer though, I still prefer PC gaming.

Hovis1974: Forgive me, GoGers if this question had been posted before but i'm curious.

Has anyone here re-visited a game from their youth recently only to be kinda disappointed that it wasn't how you really remember?

Case in point. The Ultima series recently offered here by GoG. Many, many moons ago I had Ultima 3 for my Atari ST and i remember as a child playing that game for HOURS on end and really enjoying every minute of it (mind you, i only had about 8 games at the time). I also had Ultima 4 and 5 as well and as with Ultima 3 spend a lot of my free time playing these games.

Fast Forward 25 years...i see on GoG, the Ultima series...INSTABUY. Even downloaded the graphical updates that a few fan sites have offered...started playing..and an hour later i'm turning off the computer with a minor frown...the magic was gone.

Now guys, i'm a gamer from WAY back..I KNOW the Ultima series is a legend in computer gaming and that certian games of the series was better than others, and through it all, i still really do love the series as a whole......just feel a little underwelmed by some of these classics....Has today's gaming of fast systems and uber graphics spoiled today's gamer? Am I a victim of being hypnotized by the new fast and shinys? IS THERE NO TURNING BACK??

I kid, but that really does bring up a good question...any games that you guys remember that stole your childhood now taste like a stale cracker in your mouth?
There is turning back: it takes me everytime a lot of psychic energy but I can delete all the progress (or better, regress) done in all these years. I can enjoy these games again! It's helpful to play with an adeguate vintage-pc system.

I took your advice, but I had to modify the way I play. I reduced my play speed by 60% and really slowed down my weaving, dodging and turning. I also limit my session play to less than 30 minutes. All this seems to be working. I'm glad I didn't give up because there are so many good old FPS.
