Aliasalpha: I blame the pope
I would have said Mario and Luigi...
I'm italian, and the report is quite right when it says that we are the european nation who pirates the most. Unfortunately 60 euros are really too much for a new game, and with the economy going bad it's really a shame that entertainment is so costly.

Anyway, that's why I converted all my friends to services like GoG and Steam. The prices are affordable and the games are top-notch. No one in my gaming circle pirates anymore, I'm really happy to say that!

Roman5: I knew that Piracy was always widespread in Spain but...why Italy? i never knew this - can someone please explain this to me?

Catshade: Don't Italy have a crappy economy lately? That might indirectly cause some Italians to buy less games and resort to piracy.
Italy's economy has always been shitty. I remember, pre-Euro, the exchange rate was something like 8 MILLION Lira to the GB£....

(maybe a slight exaggeration, there, but it was an obscene amount of Lira to the £) :P
It kind of works (or worked) for them, though
Guess they didn't consider Russia a part of Europe?

Remember though, one thousand lire was $1 AUD. And that was back when 1 GBP was like $9.50+ AUD
It's a known fact (at least in homeland) that Italy has a high piracy rate compared to the rest of the world.

So said, I can't convince myself that every single so-called "report" on digital piracy for every country in the world isn't utter bullshit.

Titanium: I don't see any countries from ex-Yugoslavia on that list.

Are you sure you're holding the graph up right?

Ohh, we don't count. Cool. So it's privateering here, not pirating (you can't get half of the stuff you can pirate here in legal stores even if you send your money up front to a store abroad. They just don't want to sell it to you. Hate of money, I guess).
Same here. Hey Blizzard, you don't have a WoW server for my country? Don't even sell the game here? Also, are you telling me the only way to buy a 10 year old game is through your digital store where it still costs $20 when it's rightful place is in the GOG catalogue? No, thanks, I'll pass.

Delixe: and indeed publishers never factor in is the simple fact that as prices increase so does the piracy rate.
Yes, when prices decrease, so does the piracy. A little over 2 years ago, I had never paid money for a game. But when GTA 4 was released for PC, I bought it coz it was sold for just around USD 11 in my country, unlike the games before it which all cost atleast USD 20 to 30. Since then a lot of new games started releasing for around USD 11 to 13, and of course I've bought many such games. It was only during Christmas 2009 that I joined Steam and now, I have a huge collection of games because of all the discounts during the Steam sales. (the only reason I don't have many GOGs while have lots of Steam games is bcoz I'm not an old gamer and am unfamiliar with most of the games here :P)

How did that decrease piracy, you ask? Well, when me and my friend went to the shop to get him his a copy of GTA 4, it was sold out in 4 out of 5 shops we looked, a year and half after it was released for PC while even brand new EA titles which cost USD 20 here were still on the shelf. A few years ago, people would laughed at the thought of 'buying' games. But now, games more than a year old were sold out. Isn't that convincing enough proof that piracy has indeed decreased here for games like these?

Somalia has much more piracy then europe alltogether. But real piracy not those cool virtual pirates that download some music mp3s or games. Hang them higher.

Have a nice bounty hunt.

It's not much better in the EU/UK store - £9.99 or ~US$15. I just Amazoned a replacement Starcraft1+expansion for half of what they charge.
